Advanced Placement:

Top Ten Things about the Advance Placement Program at West Seattle High School

  • We are committed to increasing the number of students taking AP courses at West Seattle High School on a yearly basis.  This includes students from all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Seattle Public Schools has set a goal by 2013 that 4 out of 10 high school graduates will have successfully completed one AP course.
  • Every student at West Seattle High School enrolled in an AP course has the opportunity to take an AP exam in order to earn college credit or college placement. Students are encouraged to check the website of prospective colleges and universities about their AP course acceptance policies.
  • Students prior to enrolling in an AP course must receive a “B” grade or better in Pre-AP courses and earn passing scores on state assessment.  Students can appeal to the AP Coordinator if unforeseen circumstances (e.g. family emergency) prevent them from meeting the requirements above.
  • We are committed to increasing the number of students who pass AP exams at West Seattle High School on a yearly basis. This includes increasing the number of students who are recognized as AP Scholars and AP Scholars with Honors.
  • Every student at West Seattle enrolled in an AP course practices and demonstrates college ready skills in high school.
  • The first two weeks in May of every year are designated by the College Board and ETS (Educational Testing Service) for AP exams in all subject areas.  Students are expected to take AP exams for classes in which they are enrolled.
  • Students taking an AP course at West Seattle High School should expect an average of a ½ hour of homework daily in each AP class they are enrolled.
  • All AP courses at West Seattle High School are year long courses with the exception of AP U.S. Government & Politics.  This requires students to be committed to a year long worth of study.
  • Students are expected to attend review sessions in the spring as preparation for AP exams.  The review sessions take place during state assessment in March & April.
  •  At present, the fee for an AP exam is $86.  Exam fees are collected at the beginning of second semester.  Financial assistance is available for students who qualify.

  • Current AP course offerings for the 09-10 school year include AP Calculus, AP Statistics, AP Language Arts 11 and 12, AP American Government and AP United States History.
