Distribution Education Chapters of America - What is DECA?

DECA is a student leadership program. DECA’S mission is to enhance the co-curricular education of students with interests in Business and Marketing, Management and Entrepreneurship. Students develop skills and competencies for marketing careers, build self-esteem, experience leadership and community involvement. DECA is committed to the Advocacy of marketing education and the growth of business and education partnerships. The club is designed to promote civic consciousness, leadership development, social intelligence and career understanding. Students are engaged in several seminars, conferences and competitions at least three times a year. Students compete in the areas of Finance, Technical Marketing, Apparel and Accessories, Sports Marketing, Quick Serve, Full Serve Restaurant, Marketing Management, Entrepreneurship, and E-Commerce.

Students can only join this club if they are enrolled in the Marketing Education Class.

In DECA, students have an opportunity to experience a paid internship in a large corporation. Students implement and run a business during the lunch periods daily.

Meetings are held every Wednesday during lunch at 10:40-11:05 a.m.

WESTSIDE’S DECA/MARKETING, FASHION AND PHOTO PROGRAMS TAKE OFF!
Westside DECA Collaborates with Rainier Beach to Design Marketing Campaigns! Westside’s DECA/Marketing Program is working in partnership with KBSG Radio, Seattle Public Utilities and Rainier Beach High School to design a marketing campaign for RB’s Recycling Program that will reach teens! Six teams of WSHS students competed against each other with their marketing campai for print, TV, web and radio ads, in addition to designing launch events and ongoing promotional events for Rainier Beach. Our Westside Marketing/DECA students visited Rainier Beach to interview the staff and students, tour the school and pass out surveys. RB will use the winning campaign to boost their recycling program in the 2007-2008 school year!

Brand New Fashion Program at Hiawatha (think “Project Runway”)! Please Join Us!
Westside’s Fashion Merchandising Program has been working in partnership with Seattle Parks and Recreation, and designers from Union Bay Clothing and FIDM, to design a program, and write a grant (we got it!) to start a brand new Fashion Design Program at Westside’s nearby Hiawatha Center! This program, (meets Wednesday afternoons 3-6 pm through August 1, 2007) which includes trips to local fashion design houses and lots of interaction with professional designers, teaches students how to design, make patterns, sew, and work with a model to have their fashions exhibited in a final runway show! If you have a background or interest in fashion design, please feel free to stop in and share our “passion for fashion” on any Wednesday afternoon. Contact Martha Tonkin (contact info below) for more information!

Spring Expo on Thursday, May 17, 200, 4-8 pm7! Will YOU Be A Judge?
Westside’s DECA/Marketing, Fashion Merchandising, Photography and Web Students will compete against each other for top awards in a gala event on Thursday, May 17, 2007. Students, “dressed for success”, defend their semester’s work to dozens of wandering judges, who choose and present the winners with trophies, certificates and gift certificates at the end of the evening! Music, food and a lively atmosphere make it a fun event… please contact Martha Tonkin, (contact info below) if you have expertise in one of the areas mentioned and enjoy judging a teen competition for a few hours on Thursday, May 17! We’d love to have you!
