of America - What is DECA?
DECA is a student
leadership program. DECA’S mission is to enhance the co-curricular
education of students with interests in Business and Marketing,
Management and Entrepreneurship. Students develop skills and competencies
for marketing careers, build self-esteem, experience leadership
and community involvement. DECA is committed to the Advocacy of
marketing education and the growth of business and education partnerships.
The club is designed to promote civic consciousness, leadership
development, social intelligence and career understanding. Students
are engaged in several seminars, conferences and competitions at
least three times a year. Students compete in the areas of Finance,
Technical Marketing, Apparel and Accessories, Sports Marketing,
Quick Serve, Full Serve Restaurant, Marketing Management, Entrepreneurship,
and E-Commerce.
Students can
only join this club if they are enrolled in the Marketing Education
Class.
In DECA, students
have an opportunity to experience a paid internship in a large corporation.
Students implement and run a business during the lunch periods daily.
Meetings are
held every Wednesday during lunch at 10:40-11:05 a.m.

WESTSIDE’S
DECA/MARKETING, FASHION AND PHOTO PROGRAMS TAKE OFF!
Westside DECA Collaborates with Rainier Beach to Design Marketing
Campaigns! Westside’s DECA/Marketing Program is working in
partnership with KBSG Radio, Seattle Public Utilities and Rainier
Beach High School to design a marketing campaign for RB’s
Recycling Program that will reach teens! Six teams of WSHS students
competed against each other with their marketing campai for print,
TV, web and radio ads, in addition to designing launch events and
ongoing promotional events for Rainier Beach. Our Westside Marketing/DECA
students visited Rainier Beach to interview the staff and students,
tour the school and pass out surveys. RB will use the winning campaign
to boost their recycling program in the 2007-2008 school year!

New Fashion Program at Hiawatha (think “Project Runway”)!
Please Join Us!
Westside’s Fashion Merchandising Program has been working
in partnership with Seattle Parks and Recreation, and designers
from Union Bay Clothing and FIDM, to design a program, and write
a grant (we got it!) to start a brand new Fashion Design Program
at Westside’s nearby Hiawatha Center! This program, (meets
Wednesday afternoons 3-6 pm through August 1, 2007) which includes
trips to local fashion design houses and lots of interaction with
professional designers, teaches students how to design, make patterns,
sew, and work with a model to have their fashions exhibited in a
final runway show! If you have a background or interest in fashion
design, please feel free to stop in and share our “passion
for fashion” on any Wednesday afternoon. Contact Martha Tonkin

Spring
Expo on Thursday, May 17, 200, 4-8 pm7! Will YOU Be A Judge?
Westside’s DECA/Marketing, Fashion Merchandising, Photography
and Web Students will compete against each other for top awards
in a gala event on Thursday, May 17, 2007. Students, “dressed
for success”, defend their semester’s work to dozens
of wandering judges, who choose and present the winners with trophies,
certificates and gift certificates at the end of the evening! Music,
food and a lively atmosphere make it a fun event… please contact
Martha Tonkin, (contact info below) if you have expertise in one
of the areas mentioned and enjoy judging a teen competition for
a few hours on Thursday, May 17! We’d love to have you!

DECA to Visit KOMO TV’s Northwest Afternoon in May (TBA)!
Please Join Us!
Westside DECA and Fashion students have been invited to visit a
live taping of KOMO TV’s Northwest Afternoon in May, 2007!
If you have an interest or background in TV, and you’d like
to be a chaperone for this very lively and fun field trip, please

Westside
Digital Photography Students to Exhibit at ArtWorks Gallery! Saturday,
May 26, 2007! 12-5 pm
Westside Digital Photography students will exhibit in a downtown
Seattle gallery on Saturday, May 26, 2007, from 12-5 pm. Please
join us to celebrate the work of these 26 talented young photographers,
who have been mentored throughout the semester by former Pearl Jam
photographer, Lance Mercer! Students will be exhibiting and selling
prints at this show: proceeds go to support ArtWorks and the young
photographers themselves! If you have an interest in photography,
and would like to help with the show in any way, please contact
