Music Program: Overview

Welcome to the Whitman Music Program! The Music Department at Whitman Middle School enjoys a long-standing tradition of musical excellence. This level of excellence is maintained by individual and group accountability through rigorous academic study and effort. The Whitman Middle School music program provides many opportunities for the individual growth of each student. It is focused on offering experiences to young people that will result in their finding joy and excitement in the creative art of music. The emphasis of the program is placed on active participation in playing instruments and singing in an ensemble setting. There are about 200 students in band, orchestra, choir and guitar classes. Classes meet every day and students are encouraged to practice outside of class time. All students have the opportunity to participate in one or more of the ensembles. Whitman offers concert band, orchestra, choir, guitar, and jazz band (advanced).

Students enrolled in music classes will be taught basic elements of music, advance their ability to read, write, and interpret music. They will gain an ability to sing or play independently and in groups. In addition, students will learn the application of proper instrumental techniques and listening skills.

The instrumental music director is Mr. Baldwin.
The Orchestra, guitar and choral director is Ms. Cleary.

All ensembles perform in concerts throughout the year. See the calendar for performance dates. All musical groups provide the students with a chance to perform in concerts several times throughout the school year.
