Band Ensembles

Music at Whitman is organized by grade level. That means if you are a 6th grader, you take 6th grade band. If you are a 7th grader you take 7th grade band and so on. Bands meet each day and by grade level, and there is a 6th grade band, 7th grade band, and an 8th grade band. The Band Director is Mr. Baldwin who has been teaching at Whitman since 1987, and can play all the instruments of the band.

Grade Level Bands:

Grade level bands are open to all students whether they have played an instrument previously or not.

Band classes (6th, 7th & 8th ) meet every day. Our band rehearsals begin with scale and rhythm warm ups followed by rehearsal of a concert band music. There is only a single Music teacher in the classroom. Students are issued a music folder for which they are responsible to keep and maintain through out the year. In the beginning of the year we work on , and work on a repertoire of 15 to 20 different selections ranging from simple to intermediate early in the year and progressing with increased difficulty as the bands grow in ability and maturity.

EXPECTATIONS FOR MUSIC STUDENTS:
BRING YOUR INSTRUMENT TO CLASS EVERY DAY
PARTICIPATE, BE ATTENTIVE, LISTEN, AND GIVE YOUR BEST EFFORT
PRACTICE YOUR MUSIC OUTSIDE OF CLASS

For the best success Students NEED to practice their instruments outside of band rehearsal time. Music lessons will go a long way toward a students progress on their instruments. To help families who are interested we have assembled a list of local instrumental music teachers. You can find the list of potential private music lesson instructors on the music forms page. Another option for lessons and practice time is the Music Tutoring Program offered after school at Whitman. Click to see the Music tutoring flyer. or contact Scott Radford (swradford@msn.com) for more information.
