Math

Department Head:

Gordon Webb

General Information:

Math classes are basic skills classes and are required in all grade levels.

Every effort is made to place students in math classes that are both challenging and appropriate for the individual student.

Placement is determined by final grade of the previous math class, teacher recommendation and IOWA test results.

6th Grade Math: The content of this course includes place value through millions, estimation with whole numbers, decimals and fractions; area of triangles and rectangles, volume of rectangular prisms, angle measure and construction; conversion of units in the metric system; real life applications and the development of problem solving skills are emphasized.

6th Grade Spectrum Math: This class is a blend of 6th and 7th grade curriculums, numerous supplemental projects and story problems. Entrance to Spectrum classes requires pre-qualification.

7th Grade Math: Reviews and extends the skills and concepts associate with the operations of whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Also covered are measurement in both the customary and metric systems, geometry, ratio, proportion and percent, number theory, problem solving and some pre-algebra.

7th Grade MESA: MESA students are from groups that are under-represented in the fields of Math, Engineering and Science. These students are recommended by their teachers because they show potential in math. The program goal is to strengthen their math skills and help them get enough math for college even if they do not choose a math related field.

7th Grade Honors  Math: By teacher recommendation. This math level is not tied to Spectrum classes. Reviews and extends the study of the skills and understanding of previous mathematics courses. Topics covered include the solution of one and two step equations, integers and integer operations. Geometry and measurement, number theory, squares and square roots, graphing on the coordinate plane, simple interest, the Pythagorean Theorem, ratio and proportion, simple probability and statistics.

8th Grade Math: This course reviews and extends the skills and understandings of previous mathematics courses. Topics covered include: the solution of one and two step equations, integers and integer operations, geometry and measurement, skills and concepts to include units and geometric figures not previously considered, e.g., area and circumference of circles, surface areas and volumes, classification of quadrilaterals, etc. Squares and square roots, Pythagorean Theorem, ratio, proportion and percent, simple interest, simple probability and statistics.

8th Grade MESA: MESA students are from groups that are under-represented in the fields of Math, Engineering and Science. These students are recommended by their teachers because they show potential in math. The program goal is to strengthen their math skills and help them get enough math for college even if they do not choose a math related field.

8th Grade Enriched: Pre-algebra. Students are selected by their 7th grade teachers for this class. These students have shown readiness to begin working abstractly with mathematical concepts.

8th Grade Honors Math: This course is for students ready to tackle first year algebra, beginning geometry and basic trigonometry concepts. A student gets into this class by teacher recommendation, this math level is not tied to Spectrum classes. This class is an acceleration of the high school course work. If a student takes this class and earns an A or B, they will be placed in the 2nd Integrated book as a 9th grader.
