Whitman Track 2005

Track is a spring sport.

Be sure to have your physical on file before tryouts.

Track is every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30-4:00, beginning the last day of February and going through mid-May.

There are four track meets at Whitman. They are the first four Thursdays after Spring Break. Meets usually last until 5, though all runners don't have to stay for the their duration. The final is the All-City Meet, usually held at the Southwest Athletic Complex (near Sealth/Denny on Thistle) in mid-May.

We focus on sprinting, distance running and relays. We emphasize stretching, running and fun. It is a no-cut sport. Everyone runs. There are two distance events: the 1600 (four times around the track) and the 800. There's the 400 which is kind of a long sprint. The sprinting events are the 50 (sixth grade only), the 100, 200, 4x100 relay and the 4x200 relay. There are no field events.

Our philosophy is to have fun, build running strength, promote sportsmanship, and, at the end of the season - position our team in a way that will be able to compete in a strong manner in the All-City meet.

Things parents have done in the past:

  • run concession stands during the meets
  • helped with sweats' orders
  • assisted with the team party
