6th grade students have four semester elective slots available for the year. PE is mandatory for all 6th grade students and equals one semester elective. Band and orchestra are full year courses and equal two semester electives. The other elective options are 9 week (quarter/term) rotation courses designed to give students exposure to the various electives offered. The rotation courses are paired together to create a semester course. Available rotations are TV/Technology, Spanish/French or Spanish/Japanese and Art/Health. These rotations are randomly assigned to students.

What kinds of extra support classes are offered?

We offer support classes (ASE) in both reading and math. Class size is limited to 15 students to allow for more student/teacher interaction. Students not meeting standard on WASL for reading and math are offered support classes. These support classes take the place of elective courses. Parental requests for support classes are honored when space allows.

How do students get into Advanced Math classes?

Assignments are based on results of a 90 minute timed placement exam which is offered two times during the summer. This years placement exams will take place from 10am to 12pm on Wednesday, June 25 and Monday, August 18 in the Whitman school library. Students may only take the test on one date. Students must register for a test date and turn in a completed teacher recommendation from their current math teacher by Friday, June 13. Recommendation forms will be distributed to elementary schools during school visits in April. They will also be available on the website. Placement results will be communicated to students/parents after the August 18 test.

How can parents get involved?

There are many volunteer opportunities through the PTSA including; school store, lunch monitoring, office and library assistance, and various committees and events. While volunteer opportunities may not be as plentiful as when your student attended elementary school there are still numerous ways to support your student and our school.

Will my student receive and use a planner?

Student planners will be available for purchase. All students are expected to use their planners daily and planners are checked by teachers frequently.
