Sojourner Place .....As some of you are aware, I have been engaged in doing some volunteer work in various capacities since I retired. Last year I learned about a halfway house for battered women--The Sojourner Place. I had toured the facility during the Spring of 2005 and had been saddened by the fact that they had no books. Their existing books had been thrown away because they were so old, tattered and out-dated. My silent resolve was to create a library for these women. Knowing that there are always books left after the VR book sale, I asked if I could take those leftover books to Sojourner Place. I was given six cartons of books, including self-help, novels, mysteries, cookbooks, history and general interest volumes. Other acquaintances heard about the project and I was given about two hundred more books to go along with ones which I picked from my own collection. .....I think all of us, together, have donated around 400 books to the Sojourner Place. I am now trying to collect cookbooks for the women so that, as they move on and establish their own homes, they can choose a cookbook to take with them. If you would like to donate a cookbook for the Sojourner Place please drop it off at the View Ridge Office before the end of the year. I want to thank all of you from the View Ridge community for your continuing generosity. Annette Tobin, Retired |
