Matthew Henson

Claim to fame:

Matthew Henson was the first person to set foot on the North Pole. In 1909, on his sixth trip with Robert Peary, Henson went ahead of Peary who had a bad case of frost bite. He placed the American flag at the North Pole.

Claim to fame:

Astronaut Guy Bluford was the first Black astronaut to orbit the earth in the space shuttle Challenger in 1983.
