The Center School Community Association
Board Meeting Minutes
November 5, 2001

Attending:

Parent representatives: Blair Butterworth, Teru Lundsten, Kathleen Doherty Goldfarb
Student representatives: David Krom, Logan Pecore
Teacher representatives: Jon Greenberg, Denise Sobieralski, Julie Reeder
Administrator: Judy Peterson
Seattle Center representative: Laurel Minter

Minutes: The minutes of the 10/11/01 board meeting were approved.

Old Business: Attorney and parent Carol Hepburn agreed to continue working on the bylaws for the CSCA, making sure they comply with state and federal standards for non-profit organizations. The CSCA will need to apply for a federal tax ID number, but can use the school number temporarily.

Public Input: Parent Wendy Graff addressed the board about the current lack of ways for parents to get involved with the school and the CSCA. Board members explained that many committees, including Community Relations and Communication, have not been established. Wendy Graff agreed to head the Community Relations committee.

Parent and chairman of Washington Alliance for Arts Education Grace Reamer addressed the board about two program Center School students and staff might be interested in participating in: Imagination Celebration (in conjunction with The Seattle Children's Festival in May) and the Summer Arts Academy. She left information about the programs.

Principal's Report: The end of 1st Quarter is Friday, November 9, 2001. Parent conferences are scheduled for November 28th, 2001 from 2:00PM to 7:00PM. The staff has just updated the mission statement for the school and is currently working on their vision of a Center School graduate. Staff is also starting work on the internship program for Juniors. Students are beginning the Proof Project in Interdisciplinary Studies. The Seattle Repertory Theater is working closely with the school on this project. Incoming freshmen will be selecting schools soon and a parent is needed to coordinate marketing. Bids for the remodeling process are currently open. Construction should begin in February.

Fundraising: Blair Butterworth reported that the CSCA has received $2410 from 22 donors as a result of the fundraising letter that was sent home last month. Kathleen Doherty Goldfarb will produce a thank you card using student artwork to send to the donors.

Bank Accounts: Two accounts have been opened at Key Bank, one for the CSCA and one for the ASB. The ASB account will have to be moved to a school account.

Directory: Kathleen Doherty Goldfarb reported that 43 families have submitted directory information. A flyer requesting information from the rest of the families will be included in the next newsletter.

Newsletter: Teru Lundsten reported that the next newsletter will go out next week. The title of the newsletter will be The Messenger. There is not currently enough volume to use a bulk mail permit. Laurel Minter suggested that other community members would like copies and she will generate a list of recipients. There was a question of whether both parents can receive the newsletter in families with two parent households. Judy Peterson will research this.

Selection of Treasurer: A parent volunteer is needed to be Treasurer of the CSCA. There was a question as to whether the Treasurer could be a non-voting member of the board. The discussion was tabled until the bylaws are ready to be voted on.

Joining a PTA: Grace Reamer volunteered to look into joining the Washington State PTA. Joining as a local unit would allow the CSCA to purchase insurance and would give additional benefits and support to the organization.

Committees: There is a need to start forming CSCA committees. Some suggested committees are Budget, School Culture, Development, and Instructional Program. A parent meeting will be scheduled to discuss the need for committees and chairpersons.

Newspaper: The first student newspaper is coming out next month. Grace Reamer is advising the club. The club is trying to raise money to purchase a digital camera and a scanner.

Next Meeting: December 3, 2001 at 5:00 PM.
