MAY 2002 CSCA MEETING MINUTES
.
The
Center School Community Association
Board Meeting Minutes
May 6, 2002
Attending:
Andrea Edwards, Wendy Graff, Jon Greenberg, David Krom, Dick Lee, Teru
Lundsten, Laurel Minter, Logan Pecore, Judy Peterson, Tony Puglisi,
and Denise Sobieralski.
Minutes:
The minutes of the 4/1/02 board meeting were amended and approved.
Treasurer's
report: The treasurer's report was distributed and approved. We
netted $1,243 from our first Krispy Kreme effort.
Public
input: Dick Lee of Richard J. Lee & Associates presented a proposed
plan of strategy for fundraising and other development. He would work
4-8 hours per week for TCS and charge us $1,000 per month, which would
be split evenly between the school and the CSCA. He has worked with
several local public high schools over the years. The "Ballard
Bash," which he inaugurated 12 years ago, has made about $750,000
for Ballard High School. The CSCA board will consider his proposal and
make a decision at or possibly before the next meeting.
Unfinished
business: The board discussed the Standing Rules and suggested small
changes. They will adopt the revised version at the next meeting.
NEW
BUSINESS
-
PTA
membership fees: The board set the minimum PTA membership dues
at $10. Of this amount the CSCA will receive $2.25 ($7.75 goes to
other tiers of the PTA). Donations are not limited to $10, however!
A notice will appear in the next newsletter notifying parents of this
decision and asking for 100% participation in the fall.
-
Next
year's CSCA budget: Andy distributed a proposed budget that she
and Teru hammered out. Though conservative, the board approved the
CSCA 2002-03 budget as written.
-
Wild
Waves scholarships: The board approved granting scholarships to
students who need them to go on the Wild Waves field trip June 19.
The availability of these scholarships will be announced in Advisory.
To maintain confidentiality, staff will process the simple application
forms. The board decided that next year scholarships should be automatically
available to students in the free/reduced lunch program.
-
No
CSCA members will attend the retreat in Bellevue May 17 & 18,
but there will be another on October 25 & 26 which we must attend
to take advantage of future Gates Foundation leadership retreats.
-
The
board approved the expenditure of $130 for Judy Peterson and a member
of the Development Committee to attend an arts luncheon at the Sheraton
Hotel on May 23, a great opportunity to network.
-
We
must be out of Sacred Heart by the end of June, but we can't move
into the new space until mid-August. In the interim things will be
stored at the old Lincoln High School.
-
We
have received over 90 applications for the two additional humanities
teaching positions available for next year.
-
David
asked about bathroom passes. The current policy will remain in place
because students using the bathroom during class is disruptive --
they should get in the habit of going during break (emergencies excepted).
-
Students
would like to be involved in Folklife. Volunteer opportunities are
available.
-
Advisories
should be consistent with each other.
-
David
asked if water bottle sales could be reinstated. No, money has been
stolen, students must bring their own water bottles. It was suggested
that next year, to conserve plastic, students sell reusable TCS water
bottles as an ASB fundraiser.
-
David
asked if students may choose their teachers next year. The answer
is no.
Development committee: See Treasurer's Report and Dick Lee's proposal.
School culture
committee: Per the minutes of their 4/18/02 meeting:
-
There
are complications scheduling Ultimate Frisbee in Memorial Stadium
this spring; they will pursue this in the fall.
-
An
after-school Theatre Sports Club will begin, and the Diversity Club
might re-start.
-
The
TCS banner will be ordered soon.
Community
relations committee: Wendy reported that a social will be held May
31 in the Center House. Teachers and volunteers will be recognized,
food will be served, and a tour of the new space might be available.
Yearbook:
Denise reported that the yearbook will be out in June. This first
yearbook production will end up in the red.
Seattle
Council PTSA meeting: Teru attended this meeting April 30. She received
good advice on how to address legislative activity in the IRS Form 1023.
-
The
National Honor Society held an induction ceremony April 22.
-
Hannah
Peragine and Anna Talvi from the Debate Club participated in a competion
in Berkeley, California, where Anna was recognized for her speaker
points.
-
The
newsletter was mailed today.
Next
meeting: June 3, 2002 at 5:00.
