PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

What an exciting year it has been as I reflect back on those harried days right before school started when boxes were being unpacked and furniture was being arranged in new classrooms to make everything as ready as possible. We had a great dedication program, that served not only to honor notable dignitaries like August Wilson, but also to recognize another beginning and to launch a larger group of students to greater academic success. Now it's already the end of the year, and we are looking forward to another very special year in which TCS graduates its first seniors, the Class of 2004.

As anticipated, we expect to enroll slightly more than 300 students next year. The staff and I are already in the throes of planning for next year, and most of us will be using the summer months to develop new courses; order additional textbooks, equipment and supplies; hire new staff (Humanities, Math, and Science teachers, an Internship Coordinator, and an Attendance Secretary); and revise the daily schedule. By now students have shared with you the courses that will be offered next year and we are very excited about the expanded opportunities in new arts classes as well as the enriched content being designed for senior classes.

To better accommodate student needs and to maximize building capacity, the schedule will be revised to provide for increased flexibility. On four days a week, classes will be organized into eight 50-minute and four 105-minute periods beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m. However, students will have a flex schedule that will enable them to attend school earlier or later in the day. Early dismissal will continue on Wednesdays with a modified period schedule.
During these last two years, our school has been blessed with outstanding parent and community support, without which we could never have had the success we experienced. So heartfelt thanks to all - I look forward to seeing you and all our new students and parents in September.

— Judith Peterson, Principal

TEACHER PROFILE

Carolyn Reynaud, Special Ed Teacher

Carolyn Reynaud grew up in Brooklyn, enjoying the Dodgers, Coney Island, chocolate egg crèmes and stoopball. After graduating from a huge high school (over 5000 students), she chose a small college on the eastern shore of Maryland; then spent a year at the University of Vienna. That's when her fascination with the possibilities of world travel began. "As a Brooklyn girl, I was amazed that I was actually overseas. I used to be excited to travel to New Jersey!" She later received her B.A. in Philosophy from George Washington University, and eventually obtained her teacher certification, special education endorsements (W.W.U.) and her M.A.

But before turning to teaching, armed with her "practical" degree of philosophy, she began exploring job opportunities. She had many different work experiences, ranging from the harsh realities of being a social service caseworker in the South Bronx, to the glamour of the N.Y. fashion industry, to the competitive drive of Wall Street. She then took a position with American Field Services, an international high school student exchange program, which afforded her opportunities to interact with young people from all over the world.

After coming west and teaching in Mukilteo, she took a few years leave for other adventures, that of motherhood and farming. "We had 20 acres and I learned what I could about raising goats, chickens and pigs. One time, I sat up the entire night with my pig and helped her deliver 13 babies. It was an amazing experience for this city-bred woman!"

"When you think about doing an article like this and look back on your life, some of your most meaningful experiences are not the ones you would typically write in a newsletter," said Ms. Reynaud. "I'll save those stories for one-on-one conversations."

Her interests include traveling, a wide variety of music and exploring new cultures and ideas. She also enjoys hiking and horseback riding around her home near Twisp (where she taught for 20+ years), independent movies and film festivals (especially if her children have some involvement or credits in their production!), and taking advantage of all the opportunities of Seattle and family life, with her husband and their five adult children.

Ms. Reynaud believes that the close, supportive atmosphere of a small school allows for an intimacy that helps students thrive. "Combine that with an arts-focused curriculum, the stimulation of the Seattle Center, and the energy and creativity of a fantastic teaching staff. Add to this the synergy of 200 plus teenagers, and all their unique learning styles and interests, and you have an incredibly vibrant learning community! I am thrilled to be a part of it."

OUR COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

Several CSCA officer incumbents were re-elected at the annual meeting on April 28, including co-presidents Wendy Graff and Bob Moore, Treasurer Andy Edwards and Vice President Carol Hepburn. Newly elected are Secretary Susan Clifford-Jamroski and At-Large member Ronnette Peters Megrey. Thanks and congratulations to all. After the election, Carol had to resign, since her son, Matt, will be attending a different school in the fall. So for those of you who wished you had signed up to run for a CSCA position but didn't, here's your chance! Let Wendy (wendyg@seanet.com) or Bob (malamati@earthlink.net) know if you're interested in serving as CSCA Vice President next year. Sincere thanks to Carol for serving as Vice President and Volunteer Coordinator for the last year.

Besides reveling in the thrilling auction results at our last CSCA meeting, we also heard about many plans for next year. Changes include a new more flexible schedule (especially on Wednesdays), freshman mentoring sponsored by The National Honor Society, and the Writers in the Schools program that parents funded at the auction. The Wednesday schedule change opens up significant opportunities for parent volunteers, so keep that in mind over the summer. This August the CSCA will hold its first planning retreat to develop a strategic plan for the 2003-04 school year.

Finally, we would like to thank Blair Butterworth for his two plus years of service to the CSCA. Blair's unique blend of brilliant strategic thinking and cut-to-the-chase delivery will be irreplaceable.

Welcome New Families!
We know that parents and guardians have a strong hand in helping most students choose their high school, so we want to welcome you to our community and thank you for guiding your students our way. Our community association grows stronger each year and we look forward to getting to know you and working with you to make TCS one of the top high schools in the country.

Communication:
Like many organizations, the CSCA and TCS are relying more and more on email for timely communication between the school and parents. The cost of postage and printing keeps going up, and the volunteer time for labeling and mailing is precious. With that in mind, we'd like to encourage everyone who can to give the CSCA an email address when we request directory information next fall. This will allow you to get better information from the school and will help keep dollars and volunteers focused in the classroom.

--Wendy Graff and Bob Moore, CSCA Co-Presidents

STAFF APPRECIATION

The second week of May was Staff Appreciation Week at TCS. On Monday, each staff member received the "Spa Package" including an aromatherapy candle, a box of chocolates, and bath salts. Tuesday they received a $5.00 Starbucks gift card. Wednesday, they were treated to a delicious luncheon buffet with 14 different salads and 9 desserts, all made by parents and one student. Each place setting had a souvenir placemat made by Wyn's art students along with a box of chocolates. Half-pound bags of Starbucks coffee were theirs to take home as well. The tables were decorated in blue and yellow with sunflowers in blue vases to keep. Thursday, the staff was treated to an envelope containing a $5.00 gift card to Staples and a $5.00 coupon donated by Staples. Friday each person received a "Stay Well" package which consisted of Echinacea tea, tissues and honey lemon lozenges. I enjoyed coordinating this special week for the staff and they thoroughly enjoyed all the surprises. I would like to THANK the following people who donated funds, food, and their time to make this special week happen: Kathleen Abrams, Suzanne Lucker, Dahli Bennett, Jayne Hulsey, Grace Reamer, Erica Bauermeister, Flora Goldthwaite, Sam Sparks, Heidi Jaehning, Morfey's Cake Shop, Linda Softing, Sandy Needham, Debbie Overman, Rebecca Durham, Georgi Krom, Tammy Banua, Winnie Bachwitz, Wendy Winslow, Norma Howard, Blair Butterworth, Rita Alli, Bruce Moen, Dianne Butler, George and Brydie Anderson, Francis and Louise D'Addario and Marjorie Anderson. I COULD NOT HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU!

--Kathleen Brose, Staff Appreciation Coordinator

[Newsletter Editor's Note: Many thanks to Kathleen for her two years of extra special effort to let our staff know how much we appreciate them. Next year she will move on to organizing the first Graduation gala, so we need someone new to coordinate Staff Appreciation activities. Ideally, this could be shared by two parents with the support of our many volunteers. Please consider taking on this important task! Respond by E-mail to kbrose@attbi.com. Thanks!]

COUNSELING NEWS

Community Service and Physical Education:
Summer is a great time for students to earn community service and/or physical education hours. If an opportunity comes up during the summer and you do not have a chance to get it pre-approved, please make sure you keep a log of the hours, a journal of the activities and have your supervisor sign off on it. This will make it easier for us to grant you the credit when you return to school.

Summer Classes:
Hopefully by this time, you have signed up for summer school if you needed too. If not, there are several private schools and correspondence courses that are available for late registration. Please contact Mr. Vance if you would like a list of these resources.

Course Registration:
Course registration forms were collected on June 6th. We trust you and your son/daughter had a chance to review the courses and make selections. We will be working hard all summer to put students into their first choices.

Seniors!!!
Next year we'll have our first senior class. This is an exciting and sometimes stressful time for students and parents. I have met with all the juniors and reviewed graduation requirements and their current credit status. If you haven't seen any paperwork about this, please ask your son/daughter. It's important that students and parents monitor progress toward graduation so there are no surprises next June. We will be hosting a senior parent night early in the fall to review the senior year and answer questions. It is always amazing how fast the senior year goes, so take some deep breaths and enjoy the time.

End-of-Year Celebration

On June 10 over 100 people, including incoming students and their parents/guardians, gathered to celebrate our first year in our real digs. The night began with a Pizza dinner from Pizza Haven. We were treated to a screening of the new school promotional video created by Kevin Boze and Grace Reamer; and a wonderful slide show of the school year put together by Ms. Sobieralski and her crew. Teachers and volunteers were duly honored with personalized certificates from the students. The winners of the Student Talent Show entertained us: featuring Anthony Simon's video, Bag Boy; Peter Stone's fabulous dancing; and Nick Proulx's video He Got Game. THANKS to all the volunteers who made this a fun night for all!
