JANUARY 2003 CSCA MEETING MINUTES
The
Center School Community Association Attending Blair Butterworth, Andrea Edwards, Wendy Graff, Jon Greenberg. Teru Lundsten, Judy Peterson, Mollie Price, Anna Talvi, Brian Vance, Ben Wheeler. Guests: Parents Bob Moore, Norma Howard, Patricia Stambor, Paul Pemberton; School Board Director Dick Lilly; and Gayle Johnson, Kristi England and Karen Manuel of the Alliance for Education. Minutes of December 2, 2002: M/S/P to approve minutes as written. Alliance for Education: The Alliance is looking for input on early release days and is gathering information from 26 schools. Ours is their first site visit. The CSCA unanimously agreed that early release Wednesdays are a good idea. If anyone has additional input, please email it to Kristi England at kristiengland@aol.com. Reports
Treasurer:
See handout. Money is still coming in from parents. Hoop Shoot has netted
TCS $500 so far. Krispy Kreme sale at Seahawks game went well.
We need to send written thank-you notes to all donors. Andy will get
the list of donors to Judy who will recruit students to write the notes
on TCS dragon note cards. It is crucial to thank our donors before we
ask them for money again. Development Committee: Auction planning is well under way. Students: No new student issues.
Administration:
All-school Community Meetings are back on track, with planning support
from teacher Molly Pritchard and student Mollie Price.
The December open house had standing room only. Upcoming Open Houses are Feb. 5 from 2-4, Feb. 25 from 6:30-8:30, and March 5 from 2-4. TCS students had four winning entries in the local Reflections contest and 2 of those are moving on to the state competition. Congratulations! Wednesday schedule revision -- Brian described plans for changing Wednesdays so that they decrease rather than increase intensity (see handout). Staff would like to implement changes for second semester. Proposal was revised so that C students will remain in tutoring, along with D and F students. Issues include how to keep up with Math and Science curricula. Other comments included starting with part of the proposed changes rather than everything at once. The revision will rely heavily on parent volunteers, especially for enrichment activities. Email Brian with any other feedback.
Instructional
Committee:
The Creative Writing Class will give a reading at Richard Hugo House
on Capitol Hill on Jan. 16 from 7-8:30.
The 9th/10th grade Humanities class is finishing a unit on Islam. They requested $340 for busses to visit Idris Mosque as part of this unit (see handout for curriculum details). M/S/P to approve funds request. The new spring Exploring the Arts class is taking shape and the hope is that it will be a cornerstone of TCS curriculum. Several expenses have been identified for this year: $500 to see the Rep's production of The Triumph of Love, $550 for Book It Theater's production of West African Storytelling, and $1500 ($25/student) for additional expenses (see handout for details). Students could pay $10 or 15 lab fee to offset some of this expense. These expenses will be included in the school budget next year, rather than all coming from CSCA. M/S/P
to approve $1950 for this course for Spring '03. That will require that
each student pay a $10 lab fee.
It was suggested that the CSCA develop decision rules for handling funding
requests.
Community
Relations:
Brochure printed. Middle schools have been contacted and TCS will send
students and/or staff wherever we can.
To make sure that all parents/guardians receive information, this committee
will work with Teru to identify all parents who are not on the email
distribution list and mail hard copies of emailed announcements to them. Volunteer Coordinator : It was suggested that we send out another request for volunteers to capture both new families and those who were too overwhelmed in the beginning of the year to complete the forms. This can dovetail into other community building efforts. Unfinished Business
Policy
on broadcast emails: Tabled.
Dragon
Sculpture:
CSCA supports finding funds for plexiglass case for large donated dragon
sculpture for entrance. Judy will get cost estimates.
Safety: Policies and procedures are on track. Norma Howard volunteered to help with this. A concern was raised about Lock-down Drills and whether accepting the need for these drills is good for students or whether the drills themselves feed into a culture of violence. Sports: Bob Poore will talk with boy and girl soccer players to determine interest in a team this spring. Ultimate Frisbee is on for this spring. Cross-country is still on the drawing board for fall. New Business SAT Prep Course: CSCA will explore possibility of offering SAT prep course. Brian agreed to initiate research. It might also be an appropriate project for the Honor Society. Announcements The Human Services Roundtable honored Jon's 11th grade Humanities class for their outstanding efforts to get the City and County to reinstate human services dollars. Next Meeting: February 3, 2003 from 5-7 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Wendy
