The Center School Community Association
Board Meeting Minutes
December 3, 2001

ATTENDING

Parent representatives: Blair Butterworth, Teru Lundsten, Kathleen Doherty
Student representatives: David Krom, Logan Pecore
Teacher representatives: Jon Greenberg, Denise Sobieralski
Administrator: Judy Peterson
Seattle Center representative: Laurel Minter
Others attending: Carol Hepburn, Chris Murray, Grace Reamer, Wendy Graff

THE MEETING

PUBLIC INPUT:

Chris Murray updated the CSCA about the Winter Sports Program and then requested that the CSCA sponsor the program. The CSCA voted to sponsor the Winter Sports Program and will begin the process of becoming a member of the PTA so that this sponsorship can happen.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:

A. Bylaws
Carol Hepburn distributed copies of the bylaws and the CSCA began the process of modifying and completing the document through article 3.41. Changes included altering the terminology of members to directors and designating the annual meeting as the first Monday of May. The CSCA agreed to finish the bylaws during the next meeting.

B. Treasurer
The CSCA decided that the treasurer, who has yet to be appointed, would be a voting member. Because parents are candidates for this position, the motion was passed that a fourth parent position be added to the board of directors. To create balance in decisions, an additional staff member will be present when voting.

C. Officers
The CSCA formally voted to make the following directors the CSCA officers:
President: Teru Lundsten
Vice President: Laurel Minter
Secretary: Julie Reeder
Treasurer: To be decided

D. Joining the PTA
Grace Reamer presented the PTA membership application. Laurel Minter offered to finish the application. The benefits of PTA membership are retroactive to the date of application, so the process of applying must be completed before the Winter Sports Program begins.

REPORTS:

A. The Principal's Report
Judy Peterson reported that the CSCA letters sent in the fall are still drawing in money. Next, she brought to the directors' attention a leadership retreat that provides training on the following topics: communication and collaboration, team and trust building, using conflict as a resource, collective focus on student learning, diversity, and establishing school culture. There are two retreats to choose from, one in Bellevue in January or one in Snoqualmie in May. We decided to discuss attending this retreat at the next meeting. Denise Sobieralski then reported that the yearbook is approaching its first deadline and that the upcoming dance will reduce the costs of the yearbook. Judy then finished her report by updating the CSCA that the staff is working on next year's program. Several committees have been formed to accomplish this task, such as the scheduling committee, team configuration committee, and others.

B. Community Relations Report
Wendy Graff updated the CSCA about the following topics/issues:
--Brochures will be ready by January.
--Information sessions to recruit middle schools are in February or possibly January.
--Wendy proposed to change the terminology of observer to member to make the language of the CSCA more inclusive; as Wendy highlighted, it is hard to build a community with observers.

C. The Directory
Kathleen Doherty reported that more than half of The Center School community has responded with information for the directory. These directories are scheduled to be distributed after winter break.

D. Newsletter Report
Teru Lundsten reported that the December newsletter is almost ready to distribute. The following newsletter will be ready for the start of February.

NEW BUSINESS:

The CSCA closed the meeting by discussing the December 11th volunteer meeting, which will increase the participation of parent/guardian volunteers. Blair Butterworth proposed sending an email before the meeting to all those who have already expressed interest in volunteering. Next, the CSCA brainstormed ways to maximize the amount of parent volunteers. The following were identified as areas that most need volunteers: public relations, community outreach, school culture, development, and budget and facilities.

The next meeting will be on January 7, 2002.
