AUGUST 2002 CSCA MEETING MINUTES

The Center School Community Association
Board Meeting Minutes
August 19, 2002

Attending: Blair Butterworth, Andrea Edwards, Wendy Graff, Jon Greenberg, Teru Lundsten, Laurel Minter, Judy Peterson.

Minutes of June 3, 2002: M/S/P to approve minutes as written with one minor change (Aug. 19 CSCA meeting held at the Center House rather than Lincoln).

Treasurer's Report: Andrea Edwards
Bank balance as of July 31, 2002 is $8,633.96, of which $1,108.30 belongs to the ski/snowboard program. That leaves approximately $7500 with which the CSCA will start the year.

The Dedication Ceremony has cost approximately $800 so far, with some more minor expenses (supplies) still to come in. The CSCA agreed to split the cost of the Dedication Ceremony with the school. To augment the coffers, there will be a donation jar at the Dedication, near the Tile Sales area outside of the school entrance.

Principal's Report: Judy Peterson

  • Ben Wheeler, former middle school coordinator at Seattle Country Day and an accomplished classical guitarist, and Molly Pritchard, formerly of Mercer Island High School and with a background in drama with a special interest in Shakespeare, have been hired as the two new Humanities teachers. Judy is still talking with a potential Digital Arts instructor, which will be an artist-in-residence position, and a Music Theory and Composition teacher.
  • 259 students have been assigned to TCS for fall of 2002. We are budgeted and have space/staff for 220.
  • Judy is negotiating with Bumbershoot for adequate parking for the Krispy Kreme sale. We will have 300 dozen/day to sell and hope for many pre-orders.

Unfinished Business

  • CSCA Board will continue to meet on the first Monday of the month, from 5-7 p.m.
  • The CSCA will hold two general meetings a year. The first general meeting this year will be Sept. 19 from 6:30-7:00, prior to Back-to-School Night activities. Committee Chairs will need to actively recruit volunteers at that time. Back-to-School activities will be from 7-8:30, followed by a social from 8:30-9:15 or so. The Community Relations Committee will recruit volunteers to bring cookies for the reception. Second general meeting will be held some time in April. Agenda will include voting for next year's officers.

New Business

  • Carol Hepburn volunteered to serve as CSCA Vice President and Volunteer Coordinator, although her son is high on the waiting list for Garfield. Teru will check with Carol to verify her interest and availability.
  • Wendy Graff volunteered to serve as CSCA Secretary. M/S/P for her election to that office.
  • Teacher and Student representatives to CSCA will be elected by their respective constituents before the next CSCA meeting.
  • Welcome Packet. Becky will distribute them at orientation. Students who don't take them that day will get them the first day of school. There are School District forms that Judy will pull together and CSCA forms. In the CSCA packet, we want forms for
-second parent/guardian at second address to receive newsletter
    -student/parent directory
    -PTSA membership
    -CSCA info
    -volunteer sign up
plus a cover letter. Wendy will type up CSCA forms and get them copied and collated.

Announcements

  • On 6/19/02 the CSCA became an official, tax-exempt organization. Kudos to Teru!
  • Interim brochure will be photocopied in black and white. When we have photos of students and staff in our new facility, we'll redesign and print again.
