APRIL 2003 CSCA MEETING MINUTES

The Center School Community Association
Board Meeting Minutes
March 31, 2003

(moved up one week, since Spring Break conflicts
with the normal first-Monday schedule in April)

Attending

Blair Butterworth, Wendy Graff, Jon Greenberg, Carol Hepburn, Lauren Overman (substitute student representative), Bob Moore, Judith Peterson, Denise Sobieralski, Brian Vance, Ben Wheeler
Guest: Chris Murray

Minutes of March 3, 2003: M/S/P to approve minutes as written.

Reports

Treasurer: No Treasurer's report because Andy was called out of town unexpectedly, though her verbal report to Bob and Wendy prior to her departure was "we're okay" financially. Chris Murray gave the final Winter Sports Report (see handout). The program ended up $2,218 in the black plus a $440 credit for unused lift tickets. One scholarship was requested. Becki has the list of students who participated and who will receive P.E. credits. Another leader is needed for next year because Chris will either step down or increased enrollment will require a second bus and thus two parent leaders.

Students: The Junior Class has instituted a joke/word/quote of the day which is being read during announcements to mixed reviews. Teachers seem to be adhering to the homework policy (no homework over breaks). National Honor Society induction will be April 21 from 5-8 at the Rep, paid for in part by a "don't come" event fundraiser. The Student Senate is holding a Talent Show on April 28. Auditions will be judged by a student panel with a faculty advisor. Tickets are $6, $4 if attendees bring a can of food.

Administration:

  • TCS's Transformation Plan was well-received by central administration and will be posted on our website.
  • TCS will hire a Humanities and a Math/Science teacher for next year. The .5 Internship Coordinator position will continue next year. TCS will also hire a .5 clerical assistant.
  • Next year's schedule will have the equivalent of 6 periods instead of 7, but they will be offered in a flexible timeframe, with some classes starting at 8:00 a.m. Plans are to "open up" the Wednesday schedule to make more time for tutoring, accelerated learning, and other personalized education.
  • College Night was well-attended. College admissions reps are coming this spring and more will come next fall.
  • TCS's relationship with the arts is still a work in progress.
  • SAT Prep class needs to be evaluated. Plans are to offer another prep class next September, prior to the October SAT.
  • Internships -- coordinator has been hired, although she likely will be bumped for next year. Process is to determine students' interests and match with what's available in the community. Parents and others are encouraged to help find placements for next year's seniors, who will need to have 90 hours of internship.

Instructional Committee:

Classes: 11th grade Humanities trip to Olympia went well; 9/10 Humanities finishing Africa Unit and moving on to India; s local poet will be working with Creative Writing class; Exploring Arts class finished mask and stories unit; Science classes are involved in restoration of Kinear Park with EarthCorps.

Extra-curricular activities: Model UN is April 4 and 5; 20 students have stuck with it; 14 students participated in and enjoyed.Math Day; 20 students are leaving April 3 for Costa Rica; Dance Team will perform during Whirly Gig; second issue of EpiCenter out, bigger and better than issue #1.

Graduation Requirements: Bethany Spinler reported on the district-wide process for revising graduation requirements. The draft is on the Seattle Schools website, and TCS website will provide a link to it. Feedback is solicited.

Community Relations Committee:
Annual Meeting and CSCA board elections will be held April 28, before the Student Talent Show. The new promotional video will be shown during intermission.

Development Committee: Auction is May 19; Dick Lee is spearheading but parents need to come through with donations and attendance.

Volunteer Coordinator: Two to three parents responded to various requests for help. We need to send out the request for help again.

Building Leadership Team: Andrea Edwards, Wendy Graff, Bob Moore, Judith Peterson, and Brian Vance attended this Gates Foundation-funded training work last week.

Unfinished Business

Funding Requests: $1200 requested for plexiglass case for dragon sculpture. Judy was requested to ask Ginny Anderson how much more it would take to improve lighting and flooring for that space. M/S/P to approve $1200 request. $500 requested for Honor Breakfast. M/S/P

Golden Acorn: Teru Lundsten and Winnie Bachwitz were nominated to receive TCS Golden Acorn awards, which requires a $65 donation for each to the PTA scholarship fund. M/S/P to award and donate funds. Wendy will finish paperwork for awards.

CSCA Elections: Two new parents have volunteered to run, in addition to those parents who are willing to continue their positions next year. Elections will be held April 28.

Cross-Country: Jon Greenberg has continued exploring. TCS could compete with the Emerald City League next fall, although we would be doing so as an independent school. Season starts 9/16 and there are 6 races, 3 of which will be in Seattle. Costs are $180 to join WIA, $3200 coaching fee (Judy will cover from her budget), and transportation. Jon will bring a more complete budget next time.

New Business

Writers in the Schools -- Molly Pritchard asked CSCA to consider funding this program for next year. CSCA asked her to explore with her colleagues how such a program would fit into the Humanities and Creative Writing programs then present next time. Judy will work with Molly on this.

Strategic Planning -- Bob and Wendy suggested an annual CSCA Board retreat sometime over the summer. Judy noted that the Small Schools coach may be able to facilitate. Bob and Wendy will draft a strategic plan for board consideration.

Announcements

  • The Ultimate Frisbee team wasn't able to recruit enough players to participate this year. This and other team sports probably need both a faculty advisor and a 'team parent' to help with communication and coordination.

  • A parent will try to recruit for a soccer team next fall.

Next Meeting: Monday, May 5, 2003 from 5-7 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Wendy Graff
CSCA Co-President
