Some great items have already started to trickle in. Some of the highlights include wine tasting at the Hoodsport Winery, a birthday party for 15 at the Children's Museum, a billiards party for twenty at Gillians, and a night at the Westin Hotel in one of their finer rooms. The Messenger is the printed (almostly) monthly newsletter of the Center School and is sponsored by CSCA. It complements the BLAST by printing announcements and news stories. The Messenger is edited by Lori MacDonald and Cindy Suzumura. The mailing team is headed by Janet Sleath.

Contributions to the newsletter can be submitted as a Word file to Lori MacDonald. Photos are also greatly appreciated (jpeg best). Deadlines for this year's messenger are as follows: 11/28, 1/30, 2/27, 4/16, 5/14 with printed copy received in the mail by the school community approximately 10 days later. For more information contact Lori MacDonald at 932-5436 or glenmac@seanet.com

PARKING IDEAS

For new parents or the uninformed, I will from time to time offer some parking tips. The Basics: The city, to encourage fewer trips in the car and to make a bunch of money, has established parking kiosks around the Center and the lower Queen Anne area. Parking is limited to 2 hours and is $1.50 per hour. The kiosks take credit cards. The parking lots in the area charge from $6.00 (across from the Key Arena) to $9.00 per day. For those students who choose to not to pay the city charges $35.00 for overtime parking and the private lots are probably more expensive. Tip: There are no kiosks on Thomas between 1st N and 2nd N. However finding a spot requires the luck of the Irish.
TEST RESULTS

Congratulations to the class of 2009 for a great performance on last spring's WASL testing. The results were smashing. The details are at the following link:

HELP

TCS is still in need of several parents who can lend their talents and efforts to continue to make Center School a great place. Some critical help is needed with our web page and people who can help with this year's auction. If you can help please contact me at 618-1080 or Cynthia Phillips at cmjphillips@comcast.net.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS:

HOMEWORK HELP The following link is for students looking for help with their homework when they won't listen to our wealth of wisdom and knowledge. Sponsored by the Library and endorsed by the district it is one resource to try.

SHAMELESS PLEA DEPARTMENT

By now you have received a plea from your CSCA to make a contribution through the Letter Campaign. We will hope you will be generous in considering our proposal. In the past year we have helped by fixing cameras for the film classes, paid for transportation to send students to Olympia and see first hand the legislature in action, underwrote the drama classes provided by The Rep, offer students a chance to see the Opera, and several other projects too numerous to list in this blast.

If your company offers gift matching, keep us in mind. It allows your dollars to go twice as far. Want to make your dollars go three times further? An anonymous donor has offered to match any pledges to Letter Campaign up to $2,000.00. This and your company's matching contribution allows your money to have 3 times the bang.

AFTER-SCHOOL
TUTORING
EVERY DAY FROM 3-4 P.M.

Did you know? Center School science teacher, Mr. Tom Pender, is holding daily after-school study table in room 454, the Chemistry Lab. Any student needing extra help in any subject is invited. Students can make up work and raise their grades. Mr. Pender wishes to thank those who have helped and encouraged students to participate. He also welcomes any volunteer tutoring assistance or any donation of snack or materials for use during this time. For more information contact Mr. Pender at Tgpender@seattleschools.org.

10% Back to Schools: Check out www.escrip.com to earn money for The Center School! If you are a Safeway shopper, check out your Back 2 Schools receipts, they are worth money for our school. If you receive one of those receipts, turn them into the Main Office.

The Successful Schools in Action (SSIA) is finishing up its first year and has made great strides in helping out the Queen Anne and Magnolia public schools. To learn more read, click here for their most recent newsletter.

Volunteers Needed!

  • The Main Office could use some help at the front desk with the management and paperwork of the school.
  • Lunch Program Volunteers: We are in need volunteers to help supervise the distribution of school lunches on a daily basis. We made lunches created by the Seattle Public School kitchen available to students at the end of last year. The salads and sandwiches provide students with nutritional lunches at a fraction of the cost of food in the food court or other local vendors. This also provides the school with an opportunity to save money and properly feed students on free and reduced lunch. The program runs very smooth and is not very labor intensive. What we need is a group of volunteers willing to commit to one, two or more days between 11:30-12:30 . Volunteers will collect and account for money collected, record how many lunches are distributed and facilitate the weekly ordering of the lunches. It is our hope that we can get enough volunteers to cover each day. Contact Wyn Pottinger-Levy (252-9861) wypottingerlev@seattleschools.org.

TEEN COFFEEHOUSE for teens whose lives are touched by cancer meets on the third Thursdays of the month from 6:30-8:30 PM at Gilda’s Club Seattle, 1400 Broadway on Capitol Hill. For more information or to sign up to attend, please call 206-709-1400.

With shrinking school budgets the CSCA finds itself in a position to do more fund raising, The money raised will, in some cases, fund programs and staff formally paid by the district. We will continue to sponsor those events that have been successful in the past. But we will also be looking for new ideas. What the CSCA needs are a few people to step forward and help. The CSCA could use a co-chair for the Auction. Wendy Graff has offered to be one of the chairs for the Auction, but needs one other parent to share the burden. We are also in need of a parent to chair the Fund Raising Committee. The position is not as daunting as you might think. Many of the pieces are already in place. Grant Writing is up and going. Dick Lee is bringing his years of experience into the fund raising. Wendy Graff as previously mentioned is co-chairing the Auction. The Fund Raising Chair would mostly ov ersee the various sub-committees. However your creative ideas for other events would be welcomed. If you are interested please call (618-1080) or e-mail (regreentee3@yahoo.com) me.

Help During the School Year: During the school year the office had one parent that came the same day each week and it was extremely helpful to her. They would like your help in establishing this routine again this year as soon as possible. If you are interested in helping out once a week all through the school year please contact the main office. If you can only help part time, that is fine also. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
The Messenger Needs YOU! If you're looking for a way to volunteer, but don't have a lot of time, consider helping with our monthly newsletter! We publish seven issues a year, generally around the first or second week of the month. We need help with inserting,
folding, sealing, labeling, and stamping. Contact Rebecca Durham via email for more information.

Volunteer Opportunities

Office Assistants - Help the office with a wide range of daily tasks. You can schedule a regular time or help on an as needed basis. Contact the main office at 252-9850.
