Personal and Professional History
I have been a teacher for five years, though it has been my dream since I was eleven years old. I graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a degree in Social Studies for Education. It is my joy to see my students develop every day in academics as well as social/emotional growth. This is my second year at Sacajawea in the K/1 multiage classroom, and I love it more every day.
Outside of Sacajawea, I enjoy spending time with my husband and my dog, Lola. We spend lots of time at my family cabin in Hood Canal as well as at the Magnuson Dog Park. I love to cook, read, and knit hats for my niece.
Sacajawea is a very special place to teach and learn, and I feel very lucky to be a part of this community.
Program Philosophy
Sacajawea is a special place for students to begin their education! The mulit-age classroom that I teach includes both kindergarten and first grades. With this model, the goal is for students to stay with me for two years, allowing for maximum growth. This allows the first graders to come into September with the ability to start where they left off.
I realize what a huge responsibility it is to create a place for students to begin school in a safe, respectful, and loving environment. It is my joy and pleasure to lead my students on the path of learning, friendship, and growth.
Curriculum
Our curriculum is focused on the whole child. Literacy and mathematics are emphasized, as academics are approached through developmentally appropriate activities. Social skills such as respect, honesty, socialization, and listening are also interwoven into every part of the day. The variety of instructional methods allow for individual, small group, and whole class activities. This supports emotional, academic, and social growth.
Expectations
My behavior expectations emphasize good citizenship and self-management. It is my goal to provide a safe, loving and happy environment where students can become celebrate being part of a community. When problems arise, I encourage students to discuss their feelings with me, with each other, and with parents, if possible.
Parent-Teacher Partnership
The connection between home and school is invaluable. Without parents, I cannot do my job, and having consistent communication with families is essential. I value my parent volunteers so much! I encourage parents to be involved in the life of my classroom and become a member of our community.
