Tuesday After School Classes

The Sacajawea After School Program, funded in part by the donations of Sacajawea PTA members, operates on regular Tuesday afternoons (no classes on early dismissal or late-start snow days). Descriptions of classes offered and are sent home approximately three weeks before the beginning of each session, and registration forms must be received at school in advance so that After School bus routes can be set. If you have questions about After School classes, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator. If an After School session is cancelled for any reason, you will be notified if a make-up session is planned.

Session 3 Classes
Jan. 15 - Feb. 12
DRAWING & PAINTING

This class will learn how to paint domestic animals using various techniques
and media. Students will see how some of the famous artists painted animals. For
our final project we will make a portrait of your favorite animal, favorite pet
or favorite stuffed animal.

| CERAMICS

Come and have fun creating pottery projects. We will sculpt bowls, plates,
pots, animals, name plates and more. Come learn clay building techniques. All
projects will be colored with glazes and fired in the kiln to create strong
and finished colorful ceramics pieces.

| SPANISH LESSONS |
Come and learn some basic Spanish, words for colors,
numbers, body parts and Spanish songs (just to name a few) or brush up on the Spanish you already
know, and learn more! Martha is a real expert, she hails from Torreon Cohulia, Mexico. So come
and learn a foreign language with a fun loving expert.

MORE MAGIC TRICKS, ORIGAMI & PUZZLES

EVERYBODY LOVES MAGIC! The fascinating Art of Magic is a combination of drama,
mimicry, song and dance, curiosity, suspense and mystery, psychology, science,
logic, humor, mathematics, manual dexterity, misdirection, creativity, and hand
to eye coordination. Learn the art of Magic for fun and entertainment. Amaze
people; astonish your friends and family using everyday objects such as cards,
ropes, coins, pins, rubber bands, and paperclips. Soon your friends will be
asking “How did you do that?!”
Our instructor has taught magic, puppetry, ventriloquism, cartooning, and origami to students and teachers in India, Denmark and is currently teaching at the Nature Consortium and of course here at Sacajawea. All materials are provided and are covered in the cost of tuition. Grades 3-5

CREATIVE CONSTRUCTION

BASED ON POPULAR DEMAND. If you left Lego Engineering saying, “I just want to
build” and you can’t count your Lego collection by the pound, then this class
is for you. Together we will create Lego masterpieces, explore angles with Knex,
and look at simple circuits and motors using the Capsela building toys. All
levels of expertise wanted. Class will focus on fun building projects. Any
study of scientific or engineering principles will be purely coincidental.
Building parts will be recycled each week, so parents are encouraged to stop by
for viewing at the end of each class. Exceptional projects will be on display
at the Science Fair.

| WOODWORKING CLASSES |
A great class for anyone who enjoys working with their hands! Come work with
hammers, nails and screwdrivers! (no power tools) Students will learn how to
assemble precut wood into wonderful creations. Students will also learn how to
use sandpaper and latex paint; and which types of projects require certain
types of painting. This class is available to boys and girls ages 6-years old
and up. All students will be able to keep the projects they make. Please bring
a paint-shirt or old clothes.

| JEWELRY MAKING |
Come explore the world of jewels. Create necklaces, earrings, bracelets,
anklets, key chains and more. Working with glass, gems, seed beads, wooden
and exotic beads, we will assemble fun, colorful, bold and elegant designs.
Wear your creations home or share them as gifts. All materials included in
price.
Grades 1-5

| MACHINE SEWING CLASSES |
This sewing class will not only teach you how to use a sewing machine, but
we will be making some wonderful projects for you or your dolls. All students
who have had sewing class previously will continue where they left off; new
students will start by learning the basics of how to use a sewing machine.
Previous sewing experience is not required. This class is available to boys
and girls ages 6 years old and up. All sewing materials, supplies and machines
will be provided for the class.

PHYSICS FACTORY
Unlock the mysteries of electricity, sound, light and motion by exploring the amazing world of physics! Build a kaleidoscope, create a musical instrument and get rolling with a K’Nex race car. From the pull of gravity to the hidden power of electrons and electrical circuits, Newton never knew physics like this! Grades K-5

| GUITAR |
Learn some essential guitar basics, including chords and right hand rhythms.
We will focus on having fun, playing by ear, keeping time and jamming as a
band. We’ll play some folk, some rock and roll, and some creations of our own.
Beginners and seasoned guitarist are welcome. You’ll need to bring your own
instrument, but if you don’t have one call Linda (525-3371) or Linny
(366-0956) and they can help you out.

| BOARD GAME: GO! |
THIS CLASS IS FINALLY BACK! HERE’S YOUR CHANCE.
In this class we will learn how to play the 4000 year old Chinese game of GO, also known as “The Surrounding Game”. Go is a 2-player game of strategy involving no elements of chance played on a simple grid using black and white stones. The goal of the game is to capture the most territory on the board. GO is easy to learn (but a challenge to master) and we will use established GO teaching methods. Each student will be provided with a complete GO game setup to take home and keep. The class is open only to students who have NOT taken the class previously. Grades 2-5

PLAYFUL PAPER CONSTRUCTION

Investigate paper constructions utilizing a wide array of techniques and
inspirations, both formal and cultural. Beginning with “Bendinis” we will
take 2-D to 3 with fun, figurative tableaux formations. Our own articulated
Action Figures will guide dynamic gesturing sketches before becoming
traditional shadow puppets. Mixed media and merriment will merge when we
form Mardi Gras Masks and Seussical Spectacles with a small celebration of
costume and adornment. We finish off this session with our ode to Chinese
New Year, Ratapalooza! This class is for 2nd grade and up, but younger ones
will be considered on an individual basis.

| AUCTION ART CLASS |
Our school auction is coming in March. We will have fun making unique art to
sell at our fabulous fundraising Sacajawea Auction. We will be painting,
stenciling and working in mixed media. A group project is also being planned.
Come be part of the fun and help support all the exciting programs that our
Auction helps fund.

| INDOOR SPORTS GAMES |
Don’t know what to do with all that energy? Then this is the activity for you!
Come and join us in the gym for indoor gym games. We will have a different
game for every week. Some of the games will be Nerf dodge ball, basketball,
Nerf soccer and more! WATER BOTTLES WILL BE A MUST. Be prepared to have fun!!!!
Class will be taught by parent Melissa Nickell and her daughter Kelsey.
