I used to be the Career Specialist at Rainier Beach in
the '90's, but I left 10 years ago. I returned last month, and it's
great to be back. Both of my kids graduated from Rainier Beach, as
well as my niece and nephew. I believe in Rainier Beach High, and I'm
very excited about helping students with Career Center services. I
want all students and parents/guardians to know that there are many
opportunities, activities and information available. There is virtually
no reason to graduate from high school and not have a plan or "road map" for
a bright, successful future. I am here to help you!
I spend time at two high schools and I'm at RB Career Center on Mondays,
Thursdays and Fridays from 7:00 am to 3:00. I am available during lunch
and students can even come during class if they have a pass from their
teacher. Family members are also welcome to come for career help, but
they would need to call for an appointment at (206) 252-6395 and sign
in at the front office on arrival.
The Career Center offers a number of services for students. I'll be
happy to help students with:
- On-line Interest Surveys to help students decide what their career interests
are
Associated careers related to the area of interest
- On-line search of four year/two year colleges and technical schools
that offer programs related to the career
- College information such as requirements, housing, tuition/materials
cost, etc.
- SAT/Act information, registration forms, practice books
- Available scholarships (Counseling office also has this information)
Financial aid information
We provide help for parents and students in filling out their financial
aid forms at Financial Aid Night. Students can get help filling out
the student's section at lunch every Friday (bring your lunch with
you to the Career Center)
Pre employment assistance such as job hunting skills, resume writing,
interview techniques, worker's rights, etc.
Military and Peace Information.
Students can talk to military recruiters from all branches of the service
in the Career Center during lunch one day a month (this day is being
determined due to schedule changes). Peace activist information is
also available.
C-West
Learn vocational skills, have a mentor, and earn money while in high
school.
Job Shadowing
After taking an interest survey, students can be matched with a professional
in the career field in order to get a better idea of what the career
involves.
Career Speakers
Each month, speakers come to classes to talk about their careers. This
is another way students can find out about careers. Students from other
classes may also sign up to hear the speaker.
