Volunteer Opportunities

Our parents and elders are the volunteers who support our students, teachers and staff. Volunteers are in the PTSA, Building Leadership Team and all other committees which coordinate fundraising efforts supporting Pathfinder K-8.

Hospitality - Pathfinder events
  • Arrange for refreshments (including set up/clean up)
  • Arrange for any special activities (I.e., family activity in conjunction with PTSA general meetings)
 
Hospitality/Tours - External Focus
  • Work with staff to organize and/or participate in enrollment tours in Jan/Feb
  • Help prepare and represent Pathfinder at school fairs during January
  • Assure school is physically presented well (work with staff to tidy and/or decorate front entrance, etc.)
  • Look for opportunities for increased visibility of Pathfinder to the community
 
Math Night - February
  • Work with Staff to plan and make arrangements
  • Plan and coordinate refreshments
  • Write up a brief article after the event for the Compass
 
School Spirit Coordinator
  • Work with staff to arrange and advertise monthly activities
 
Science Fair - April
  • Work with teachers to launch overall goals/approach
  • Send home info (flyers, instructions, deadlines)
  • Arrange for evening family Science Fair
  • Write up a brief article after the Fair for the Compass
 
Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week - May
  • Plan and execute events and activities for teacher & staff appreciation
  • Line up volunteers and manage within budget
 
Picture Taker/Historian
  • Take digital photos of PTSA/school events
  • Work with Communications leads to determine best way to share & publish
 
Communication    
Newsletter “Editor-Elect”
  • Work with Val Golding, Editor to transition responsibilities for 2007-08 school year
  • Design & publish twice-monthly newsletter
 
Communication - Overall
Coordination
  • Write PTSA column for newsletter
  • Track all messages/announcements for timely communication
  • Be central point of contact for all input; compile and share with PTSA Board
  • Advertise meetings and PTSA-sponsored events in partnership with committee chairs
  • Key liasion with Val Golding, Editor of The Compass
  • Determine when "special bulletins" should be issued (and/or work with office staff)
  • Assure timely inclusion of important articles, announcements, dates
  • Manage email database

  • Provide timely info and requests for input
  • Plan recognition/acknowledgement at end of year

  • Collect all permission/information slips from office
  • Work with office staff to assure accuracy

Administrative Support    
Childcare for PTSA Events
  • Identify childcare resources for PTSA events
  • Arrange/coordinate for each event
  • Manage overall process

School Grounds
  • Work with staff to ensure school grounds and general areas are clean & tidy
  • Beautify as necessary (gardens, etc.)
 
Membership Coordinator
  • Manage membership drive at beginning of year; collect all membership forms
  • Develop and distribute "thank you" note
  • Establish and maintain member list
  • Evaluate need for additional "drives" throughout the year; handle as needed
 
Volunteer Coordinator(s)
  • Maintain database of volunteers and interests
  • Be the central coordinating point; assign tasks and put out calls for help needed
  • Track and report number of volunteer hours for office

Pathfinder Facility Advocacy & Transition
  • Stay abreast of School District plans and processes as related to Consolidation/Closures and possible Pathfinder move
  • Assure Pathfinder community is informed
  • Work with Staff and School District to develop and implement a transition plan
  • Reach out to other affected West Seattle school communities

Liaisons    
Blazing Trails Liaison
  • Act as communication link between PTSA and BT.
  • Attend BT Council meetings
  • Prepare and present BT report at PTSA meetings as necessary

Building Leadership Team (BLT) Liaison
  • Be an active BLT member; attend meetings
  • Work as liaison between staff and PTSA to facilitate communication and collaboration
  • Report on staff activities to PTSA and vice-versa
 
Native American Liaison
  • Liaison with Native task force, Native families, Culture Night, and cultural studies program to communicate needs/issues between PTSA and Native students/families
  • Educate PTSA board & members on traditions/issues of importance to Native community
Sarah Kelly 
PTSA Council/
Legislative Contact
  • Attend Seattle Council meetings; report back to PTSA
  • Stay abreast of issues/concerns and bring to PTSA as appropriates to advocate for legislation of interest to the Pathfinder community
  • Work with other PTSA to pass, influence, or stop legislation as needed
  • Organize Pathfinder PTSA members as necessary
 
Student Activities & Involvement/ASB Liaison
  • Develop and execute strategies for greater student involvement in PTSA
  • Work with staff to suggest and assist in use of PTSA student activity funds
  • Arrange and advertise a schedule of assemblies throughout the year
