Your Math Specialist at Pathfinder!
A brief synopsis of how Laura is increasing math skills.
Kindergarten/Grade 1: Working with small groups of students to improve mathematical understanding, assessing students’ achievement in math, and supporting teachers in adoption of Everyday Math Curriculum. Classroom teachers identify students for Laura to work with through evaluation of classroom work and assessments.
Grade 2/3: Reducing class size numbers by taking half of each class and doing math journals. Emphasis will be on problem solving strategies and how to effectively communicate our answers. Prompts are created jointly by classroom teacher and math specialist.
Grade 4/5: Focusing on mastering computation skills in multiplication, division, as well as applying these skills in problem solving through Math Club. Math Club meets Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday before school and Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday after school. Each session is designed to support 12 students twice a week. Students are assessed for current level of basic computation skill mastery. The lessons are designed to meet each child where he/she is and increase their skill level.
