Crow Clan Syllabus
Welcome to 8th
Grade Mathematics!!
BIG GOALS:
- Every 8th
grade student will meet the Mastery Grade Level Expectations as set
by Seattle Public Schools and the State of Washington
- Every 8th
grade student will be prepared for high school mathematics courses
- Every 8th
grade student will gain confidence in their mathematical abilities
Curriculum:
Connected Math Project 2 (CMP2)-
Seattle School District adopted curriculum
Class Expectations:
Journals:
Journals are a way of recording
your mathematical ideas and tracking your growth. Written communication
of mathematical ideas will be a daily part of the mathematics course.
Journals will be a place for you to write about:
- Your understanding
of mathematical concepts and problem solving, including descriptions
of ideas, solutions, and justifications of problems, graphs, charts,
and observations
- Your questions concerning
the current topics in class and ideas that you need help with, or a
concepts that you don’t quite understand
- Communicate your
feelings about mathematics, your confidence in understanding, and/or
your fears about being right- journals are not to be doodled drawn on
unless it relates to your mathematical problem-solving
Organization of Journal:
- Every student will
keep an organized, through record of their learning in their math journal-
the problems and strategies in this journal will serve as a study guide
throughout the school year
- Table of contents
in journal is kept up to date and every journal entry is complete
- Journal is used
for written communication of mathematical ideas and to record strategies
for solving mathematical questions
TAI (Teacher Assisted Instruction):
Daily computation practice
serves as your “DO NOW!” during the first 20-30 minutes of your
afternoon class. You are expected to participate in computational practice.
It is your job to prove to me what you know and how you know it. Every
student will be proficient in basic mathematical operations involving
rational and irrational numbers. To meet this big goal you must be dedicated
and focused.
Being Prepared for Class:
You are prepared for class
if you have:
- Your journal and
unit book at your desk when class begins
- You have a pen or
a pencil to use for writing
- Your homework is
completed in your journal and ready for discussion
Grading:
10% of grade is participation/effort
20% of grade is homework
40% of grade is TAI and class
work
30% of grade is big projects,
quizzes, and tests
- Journals will be
checked officially twice per quarter
- Homework will be
given virtually every night and is due the following day- Unless otherwise
stated, homework is to be completed in your journal!!
- Late homework is
not accepted, unless other arrangements have been made. However, even
late homework must be completed as it is part your journal.
