Essentially there are three
large components of instruction this year, phonics, comprehension/ vocabulary,
and Writers Workshop (see below). Through the above activities
I will try to focus each student's literacy development. It
is my goal that each child be reading at his/her independent level.
This means that the bulk of my teaching time will be individual or small
group. I am a huge proponent of hands-on, student led activities,
where I may then facilitate such small group intensive lessons.
If you have any questions about where your child fits into all of this,
please feel free to drop in at any time.
Writers Workshop:
This year, Pathfinder K-8 is adopting
a new writing curriculum for every grade. It is a very inspiring,
child centered program that gives students lots of ownership over their
writing. Skills are very explicitly taught, with a lot of time
for sitting and writing. I will usually be teaching a 10 – 20
minute mini lesson, and then the students have up to 40 minutes of independent
writing at their level.
