Welcome to the 2008-09 school year! As PTA co-presidents, we are both very excited about the possibilities this school year holds for your student’s academic achievement and your family’s affiliation with Olympic View. We have a very hard-working group of PTA board members who have been at it all summer long getting ready to kick off the school year.

At Olympic View, the PTA has a long-standing relationship of financial and volunteer support of the school staff and administration, in order to further our overall mission of ensuring an exceptional educational experience for all children. We seek to involve as many parents, guardians and extended family members as possible in our activities because family engagement in a child’s school experience is a very strong predictor of that child’s future academic and social success.

Listed below are several ways you can engage at Olympic View…

› Join the PTA! [2008-09 Membership Form] The PTA is an active group of parent leaders that works hard to ensure our students receive a world-class education through academic support and community building events. Your membership entitles you to vote on PTA matters like how we raise money, how we spend the money we raise, and selecting the parent leadership team. In order to be successful, the PTA MUST be as inclusive as possible. Please help ensure our success by joining the PTA and supporting all of Olympic View’s students. PTA General Membership meetings have been scheduled for the evenings of October 22, January 21, March 18 and May 20.

› Stay Informed. Check out our website which is a valuable source of information for the OV community. Everyone can get up-to-date information on school events, calendars, legislative issues, fundraising, you name it!

› Give financially. The OVPTA is proud to have been able to make an annual gift to Olympic View to the tune of $30,000 that facilitates the continuation of valuable school programs. Because of the generosity of our community, in addition to the annual $30,000 the PTA has been able to give the school for general support, we have also recently been able to contribute:

- $14,000 to the hiring of last year’s Math Coach who facilitated a smooth launch of the Everyday Math curriculum;
- $9,000 to our family support program;
- $45,000 to support the playground rebuild project.

This year we’ll have an exciting and fun opportunity to give at our live auction in February 2009. This is our “marquis” event for fundraising this year and we encourage all OV families to participate to the best of their ability. In addition, or if you prefer, you may make a cash gift to the OVPTA at any time. This is completely tax-deductible and very simple with the secure Pay Pal option on the website. Please consider making the gift that’s right for you and inquire about company matching gifts with your employer! Many area businesses match charitable giving by employees, so please help us take advantage of this resource. Also, participate in Olympic View’s scrip program. This gift card sales program benefits OV without ANY extra out-of-pocket expenses for you. Check out more on the website!

› Give the gift of time. Volunteering at Olympic View looks different to different people. Spend time in your child’s classroom helping with writer’s workshop, art projects, reading, or chaperoning on field trips. Help in the library, set up for the carnival, prepare a dish for the multicultural dinner, take on a sales shift at the plant sale. However it works for you, there are many opportunities to choose from. It all comes back to being part of that strong social network our children need at every stage of their development.

› Have fun! There are many fun-filled family events planned throughout the year. Coming right up is Outdoor Family Movie Night in September, the Fall Carnival (October 4), the multi-cultural dinner, the drama production, the Hootenanny talent show, the list is long! Check out the monthly calendar on the website for up-to-date listings!

As you can see, throughout the school year you will be presented with many opportunities to engage, as a volunteer, as a financial supporter, and as your child’s best advocate. Please consider taking advantage of as many of these opportunities as possible.
