Special Book Clubs: Students in grades
1 through 3 may join a Book Club based on a popular series. The challenge
is to read 6 or so books and get a sticker in a Special Passport to Reading.
Examples of the types of book groups are 'Henry and Mudge' books, 'Nate
the Great' and 'Dr. Seuss.'
Young Reader's Choice and Sasquatch Contest: Students
are encouraged to read the exemplary chapter books from these lists. A
record sheet is provided in June for summer reading and keeping track
of the books read. In March, students will vote on their favorites from
each list. For those students reading 12 or more books by the third week
of March, we have a Root Beer float party and celebration of reading.
Come to the library and get a YRC/Sasquatch record sheet.
Global Reading Challenge: This is a Battle of the Books program
sponsored by the Seattle Public Library for Seattle School students that
promotes the love of reading. In teams of 7, students from grades 4 and
5 read and discuss the content of 10 selected books over a period of 3
months. At the end of March, we have a School Challenge where all teams
compete with each other on knowledge from the books read. The school's
winning team goes on to a city challenge. That winner will go on to the
Super Challenge, competing via long distance technology with teams in
other states. Come to the library for a list of this year's books.
