Here we are in December with the frost upon our nose and toes. It was wonderful to see all the students last week dressed up in their finest singing their hearts out. Thank you Mr. Lilly and students for getting us out to enjoy your voices.
We also have been busy the last month with our virtues and deciding who our student council members would be and getting our first Chronicle ready to go.
I just wanted to personally congratulate all our Student Council members. I know it will be a great year for you and I look forward to all you do. Congrats to Max Boone, 3rd Grade VP, Luke Ilgenfritz, 4th grade VP, Ty Cranney, 5th grade VP, Sydney Janeway, Secretary, Samantha Scharenberg, Treasurer and Tessa Sechler, President.
Our virtue this month is Tolerance. Ask students about our story we heard last Thursday at our kick off assembly about the tallies and the shorties. We will hold our virtue celebration assembly on December 20th at 2:30. I look forward to seeing you all there.
As you know, staff begins work in August and we have continued to have early release days and staff meeting days. You might ask, what do we do at these meetings? Well, one of the things we have been talking about is safety and independence. For instance, a few of the things we talked about back in August is that the corner at 24th NW is an accident waiting to happen, that all staff need CPR and first aid updates, coverage on the playground is not sufficient, how to dismiss kids safely and in an organized fashion and that students in the hallway before school has been a problem. These were just a few of the safety items we talked about.
To date we have been trying to get 1st aid and CPR updates for staff, we have been watching the corner of 24th carefully, we have increased the coverage on the playground at as many recesses as possible and now we are working on too many kids in the hallways in the morning without supervision.
To address this last issue, we would like you to help us. The code at North Beach has been for students to arrive at school no earlier than 8:45 am when supervision begins on the playground and go directly to the playground unless your child eats breakfast. We are asking that you help us by escorting your child to the playground in the morning if you walk or drive them and stay with them if you choose until the bell rings and then say your goodbyes outside. Teachers will pick up your child and take them to their lockers to put away their belongings. In this way, we are teaching children organizational skills, time management and the importance of both. Learning these skills now will help your child as they move on to middle school. We know and appreciate that you will support this as we have the safety and best interest of your child in the forefront. Starting Thursday, December 13th, students will be reminded to go around to the playground and wait for the bell. If you need to come in and talk to a teacher or volunteer, please do so without your child. We in turn appreciate you and want you volunteering and working with us. Thank you for all you do for us and for trusting us to make sound decisions. This is a team effort and we believe that this is a good thing for kids.
We will continue to work on the issue of safe pick up in the afternoons. Look for this is an upcoming bulletin.
Practice tolerance,
Joanne Bowers
