A huge thank you to our volunteers who worked diligently to set up and clean up for our Arts and Craft fair.  It was like walking into a little country village with the smell of chili and such in the air.  The work for such an event is very time consuming and I appreciate the time all of you gave away from your families to support North Beach.

I would also like to thank the Carni folks as Grant puts it for your energy and time and enthusiasm around the Carnival.  My observation on Saturday was that everyone was enjoying himself or herself and having a good time.

As you know this month we are working on respect.  “ The first respect is to respect myself and know that I am naturally valuable.  Par t of self respect is knowing my own qualities and that I am unique and valuable.”  When students and families talk about this over the dinner table, what comes up?  Be sure to have these conversations and have students share when they feel good about themselves and when do they have respect for themselves?

Next week I would like to invite all of you to our Multi-Cultural Potluck.  This is an opportunity to share your great cooking skills of your homeland.  My favorite part is the eating!  I know we have wonderful music planned as well.  So please come and join North Beach families for a fun night out.

We had our very first Building Leadership Team Meeting yesterday.  Our BLT this year is myself, Martha May, Christine Billroth, Gail Lorang, Sally Rivers and Tim Platt.  We would also like to invite a parent to join us.  This team is responsible for monitoring our transformation plan, monitoring budget and helping plan professional development.   We like to have our families voices heard and encourage participation in this forum.  We will meet every third Monday from 3:30- 5 except November when we will meet on the 26th and December which will have to be set. Contact Joanne Bowers at 252-1510 if interested.

I would also like to have someone working with me to be the student council lead.  There are already a great many things to be done and students are anxious to become involved in the leadership of their school.  This is a great way to interact with kids and get them involved.  Please let me know ASAP if this would be something you would love to do.  Anne Gaultier was last year’s leader and can give you all the information you need to take over.

In closing I leave you with a poem by John Soos to celebrate the cycles of the seasons and the cycle of teaching and learning.

“To Be Of The Earth”

To be of the Earth is to know

the restlessness of being a seed

the darkness of being planted

the struggle toward the light the pain of growth into the light t

the joy of busting and bearing fruit

the love of being food for someone

the scattering of your seeds

the decay of the seasons

the mystery of death and

the miracle of birth.
