FIVE FINGER RULE

(OF THUMB)

READING WITH YOUR CHILD OR

CHOOSING YOUR OWN BOOK for grade level reading.

1. Pick a book of interest.

2. Open the book to the middle to a page with no pictures.

3. Read the book aloud (preferably to someone else).

4. Hold up one finger for every word that you do not know the meaning of or that you have a great deal of difficulty pronouncing.

Results:

0 FINGERS = the book is TOO EASY!! Put' it back!

1 -2 FINGERS = the book is at the INTEREST level

3-4 FINGERS = the book is at the CHALLENGE level

5 or more FINGERS = the book is at the FRUSTRATION level and should be put back.
