The Pacific Science Center Visits

On Friday, November 2, 2000, The Pacific Science Center Van visited Montlake to help increase our understanding and appreciation of science, mathematics, and technology through interactive exhibits and class lessons. Team Two spent time in the Exhibit Room and were active learners for the Sometimes Never, Puzzling Pentominoes and Gravity Central classes described here.

Puzzling Pentominoes:Puzzled by pentominoes? A pentomino is a special arrangement of five squares that can make pictures and letters if you place them together just right. The students exercised their spatial reasoning using cool puzzle pieces and graph paper. Room 2 participated in this lesson.

Sometimes Never: Students looked at what they usually do in school, what they sometimes do in school, and what they never do in school. They took a spin with a device that predicts probability of the vents in their day. Room 1 participated in this lesson.

Gravity Central: What is a center of gravity? Students found different centers of gravity and discovered how they work to balance weight. They used different methods to locate the center of gravity in a variety of interesting objects. They discovered how some things we use are engineered to have a beneficial center of gravity.

P 3 participated in this lesson.

Room 1 did much drawing to puzzle out the
possibilities in their Pentaminoes lesson.
