Mercer gets its name from Asa Shin Mercer who was an early settler in Washington State, and the University of Washington's first teacher. Mercer Junior High School opened in September 1957. In 1989, Mercer became a grades 6-8 Middle School. Many of today's leading citizens are Mercer graduates. They come from all walks of life.
