Student Activities

Associated Student Body—Elected officers for the school, as well as representatives from each 4th period class meet regularly to plan school activities, discuss school issues, and have an active voice in the general government of the school community.

Interscholastic and Intramural Athletics—Seattle School District Middle Schools have three sport seasons:

Fall – Girls Soccer, Coed Ultimate Frisbee and Boys Wrestling

Winter – Boys Basketball and Girls Basketball

Spring – Boys Soccer, Girls Volleyball and Coed Track.

Students must have signed Parent Permission and district medical clearance to turn out for a sport. If  there is a large group of students turning out for a team, students work out together for the first part of the season then may be divided into a competitive inter-district team and an intramural team. Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA to be eligible for these teams. Students must also be on Honor Level One or Two on contest days in order to participate.

Chess Club—This activity is part of ASAP and runs all three sessions. Learn how to think logically and use strategy effectively. Registration through ASAP is required for participation.

After School Tutoring—If a student is recommended for or would like to be in the after school tutoring program, Administrators, Counselors or Teachers will make enrollment arrangements with students and parents. A parent signature giving permission for a student to stay after 2:30 PM is required for any after school program.

Yearbook—Students in the seventh and eight grades may choose to take the Journalism class which will design and produce the school yearbook, a school magazine and short news paper publications.

Video News—The Media Production class periodically broadcasts Maverick News and other special TV programs.  Students must be enrolled in this class to use the TV studios.

Math Competitions—Math Counts and the Math Olympiad are interscholastic math contests for which students can try out. Talk to your Math teacher for more information.

Event Staff—This group of seventh and eight grade students provide service by setting up sound and stage equipment for assemblies, dances and other special events. Applications are available from Mr. Quinn.

Student Assistants—Students in seventh or eighth grade may be a teaching, office or lab assistant for two semesters (either all of one year or one semester each year). To be a T.A. a student must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA and complete an application with recommendations from two teachers and a parent signature.

Dances—McClure holds several dances throughout the school year hosted by different groups.

Assemblies—Many assemblies are held throughout the year ranging from informational, entertaining, to educational or special groups (such as classes or grade levels). We invite special speakers, hold pep rallies, and recognize student work and contributions.

Field Trips—Individual classes or grades may take educational field trips. We also hold school wide trips as student “good behavior” rewards. These may include Skating Parties, the Puyallup Fair, and Wild Waves.

NOTE: These opportunities are privileges for all students who maintain an Honor Level standing at Levels One or Two. Students on Levels Three or Four will be temporarily excluded from most activities. Students on Level Four for extended periods of time will also lose privileges such as playing in the gym or being in the library or computer lab at lunch time, before or after school.
