McClure is one of the District’s smaller middle schools, allowing us to work with families as partners in the learning process. McClure is both a neighborhood school and one that reflects the diversity of Seattle. Teams of two core teachers (language arts/social studies and math/science), a school counselor, and an administrator collaborate to learn each student’s needs and strengths. With shared planning time, core teachers can integrate curriculum and discuss student progress. We serve Spectrum level students through our Achieve Comprehensive program. We offer MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement) for qualifying seventh and eighth-grade students. Support is available for students who need extra help with reading
or math. We use the inquiry-based approach for science, and sixth-graders participate in an environmental camp. Writing is a strong focus, including the Writers in the Schools program at sixth grade. Seventh-graders participate in a semester of focused literature reading and analysis, and can participate in an optional trip to Washington, D.C. Eighth-grade students may participate in yearbook production. Art Infusion, a program that integrates art
principles into core curriculum, is provided for all students. English Language Development (ELD) resources are available for bilingual students. Students take two exploratory classes, including physical education or swimming, music, drama, world language, technology, industrial technology and video production (including producing McClure’s school news via TV broadcast). Band and world languages are full-year classes. The band program includes a bi-annual competition at Disneyland. Two annual events, “The Lure of McClure” and the school musical drama production, showcase student talent in
visual and performing arts as well as academics. The Community Learning Center offers after-school classes such as creative writing, cooking, pottery, dance, movie club and homework club. We have teams for soccer, basketball, Ultimate Frisbee, volleyball and track. McClure is a school where success happens every day!
