School Community & Focus

The staff, families, and community of Madrona K-8 are committed to a structured, student-centered school environment where the focus is on each individual student's learning needs. We encourage every child to develop academic skills and goals focused toward the future, to appreciate diversity, and to reach his or her potential intellectually, physically, and emotionally. Because we have students from the beginning of their schooling through their entry to high school, we are able to truly know them and their individual needs.

Madrona K-8 School serves approximately 450 students – approximately 75% of whom qualify for Free and/or Reduced Lunch. Currently our ethnic make up is 78% African-American, 8% Caucasian, 7% Hispanic, 5% Native American, and 2% Asian. Our students from 3rd-8th grade met AYP in reading and math from 3rd-8th grade for all students. Madrona's subgroups that are used to measure AYP are African American, Low Income, and Special Education. We met AYP for all students (the combined total of all groups of students at Madrona), African American students, low income students, and special education students in reading. We met AYP for all students, African American students and low income students in math. We did not meet AYP for special education students in math. These are impressive accomplishments for our students and for Madrona. Because we met the standard in 15 of the 16 areas and not all 16, we are still in Step 3 of School Improvement. For two years Madrona did not meet AYP in mathematics for African American and Low-Income students, but last year did meet AYP for both of these groups of students. Madrona is in Step 3 for not meeting AYP for special education students in mathematics. This year we have a full time math specialist and a half time math coach to support teachers and students as we work to improve mathematics achievement for all students.

Our WASL data from 2006-2007 showed impressive achievement gains for students in reading, writing, and math across the school. At 3rd grade 76% of scholars were proficient in reading and 70% in math. At 4th grade 74.4% of scholars were proficient in reading, 46.2% in math, and 53.8% in writing. At 5th grade 65.2% were proficient in reading and 31.9% in math. At 6th grade 57.9% of students met standard in reading and 22.8% in math. At 7th grade 53.2% of students met standard in reading, 72.3% in writing, and 27.7% in math. At 8th grade, 53.5% of students met standard in reading and 20.9% in math. Despite impressive gains in 3rd-6th grade reading, 4th and 7th grade writing, and 3rd-5th grade mathematics, our data identifies a definitive need for focus on middle school math and reading achievement.
