Loyal Heights is a high performance school that uses student achievement to target site-based budget and professional development needs. Our multi-age and looping classrooms strengthen vital learning relationships by keeping students and teachers together for more than one year. Student learning demonstrates the success of instructional programs. Loyal Heights teachers use a variety of measures to demonstrate student learning, including integrated curriculum projects, portfolios, and classroom assessments.

Professional Development Focus for 2007-2008:
- Continue to be a literacy focus school with an emphasis on early intervention. Implement a school-wide balanced literacy program grades K-5. Provide a comprehensive reading program with 90 minutes of reading instruction each day. Balanced literacy will consist of read alouds, shared reading, writing, guided reading, and independent reading instruction. We will differentiate our instruction to meet the learning needs of all students from below standard to above standard level.
- Implement Lucy Calkins' model for Writer's Workshop in every classroom K-5. We are using her Units of Study as our core writing curriculum.
Professional Development Focus for 2006-2007:
- Mathematic problem solving steps
- Mathematics communication and reasoning

Professional Development Focus for 2005-2006:
- Developing Mathematical Ideas or DMI. DMI is an inquiry based model for studying mathematics
- How do children understand and develop mathematical concepts?

- Integrating NUA Literacy Initiative strategies throughout our classrooms
