Lowell Elementary School is home to two of the Seattle Public School District's all-city-draw programs, the Accelerated Progress Program (APP) and education for Low Incidence Special Education students. The APP program offers accelerated instruction for students who perform within the top 1% on standardized tests. It offers a challenging curriculum designed and taught by specially qualified teachers in a socially and ethnically diverse setting. The APP curriculum matches the student's competency level while allowing them to remain with children their own age.
The nationally recognized Low Incidence Special Education program offers excellent and challenging opportunities for students with developmental disabilities, sensory impairments and/or severe orthopedic handicaps. Instruction takes place in a secure, warm environment. It emphasizes academic and social skills in a larger community setting, including the school community of regular education learners and the outside world.
Studio art is offered to all students. The art specialist and classroom teachers work together to integrate the art program with the academic subjects studied in the classroom. During their time at Lowell, students will be exposed to increasingly sophisticated work in drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, collage, and art history.
Over 145 children receive individualized music instruction in the instrument of their choice and play in one of four instrumental ensembles. Vocal music is offered to all students and we also have two choral groups, each meeting one morning a week.
