About the Teacher
Ms. Althea Chow

Grade 2 APP
Lowell Elementary School

My career as an elementary teacher began at Lowell in the Fall of 2001.
I have taught 2nd grade since the very beginning, and I love it!

Some of the things that I love about teaching are the numerous moments when I get to witness students' inquisitive minds shining through in their insightful comments; the eager look on their faces when they are discovering new ideas for the first time; the opportunity to open their eyes to global issues and connect them to themes of empathy and responsibility; facilitating and observing students' social, emotional, and academic growth over the course of the school year; and the feeling of appreciation I receive from students and families for my hard work and dedication.

I enjoy being in the sunshine, traveling to other countries, backpacking, sea kayaking, trying new restaurants, reading, experimenting with cooking, attending Mariners' games, being an aunt, hanging out with friends, playing "Gobblet", watching panda cubs play, and more....

My husband Ryan and I got married in August 2006, and we are enjoying our new home in the fabulous West Seattle neighborhood.  Ryan is a GIS Analyst, which means he makes maps on the computer.  He's originally from Denver and is a big influence on which NFL team I cheer for.  We recently traveled to Japan's beautiful ancient capital city, Kyoto, and Seattle's sister city, Kobe, where my younger brother was studying for the school year.

My parents now live in Seattle and in New York City
, but I was born in San Francisco and grew up in Sacramento.  I initially went to college in Boston but later transferred to Seattle University, where I received my BA in psychology and then my Master in Teaching degree a couple of years later. With a teaching degree and years of experience working part-time as a classroom assistant at a local private school, I landed my first full-time teaching job as a 2nd grade teacher in the Accelerated Progress Program at Lowell Elementary!
