Laurelhurst Elementary Vision Statement

At Laurelhurst School we believe in educating the whole child. Our aim is to create an inviting school community that supports each child's innate passion for learning. Our goal is to foster the development of responsible, effective, compassionate individuals who understand and appreciate communities and cultures different from their own.

Laurelhurst Elementary Mission Statement

The teachers at Laurelhurst are facilitators of learning, posing questions that elicit creative and critical thinking, and nurturing in their students a life-long love of learning. By engaging with each student as an individual and validating and building on their strengths, we work to create community within the classroom, the school, and the larger community, while promoting independence, confidence and responsibility.

We provide educational experiences for students, which enable them to reach their highest potential and empower them to achieve their goals and dreams as successful, compassionate members of a diverse community. We provide stimulating, culturally enriching, creative experiences woven through a rigorous curriculum that integrates technology and the arts.

Laurelhurst School Transformation Plan

Our 2006-2007 school transformation plan targets these important areas:

School Demographics

The 2006-2007 enrollment is currently 449 students (grades K-5).  The Laurelhurst student body comes from a diverse geographical area.  A majority of the students come from the Laurelhurst, Matthews Beach, Bryant, Meadow Brook, View Ridge, Ravenna, Cedar Park, University, Lake City and Wedgwood neighborhoods.

The ethnic make up of Laurelhurst for 2006-2007:  American Indian 1%; African American 3%; Latino 7%; Asian 16%; Caucasian 73%.

The special needs student population for 2006-2007:  Special Education 4%;

Free and Reduced Lunch 13%

Class Size

For the 2007-2008 school year, we are planning for 25 students per classroom for each grade level. This will result in smaller classes than the negotiated district limits. We currently have three classrooms per grade level for grades K-5.  During the school day we make every effort to reduce class size even further during core subject areas by using our specialists, tutors, community and parent volunteers.

Average Class Size at Laurelhurst (2006-2007)

  • Full-day Kindergarten: 25
  • Half -day Kindergarten: 26
  • Grade 1: 25
  • Grade 2: 25
  • Grade 3: 25
  • Grade 4: 25
  • Grade 5: 25

LASER:  Before and After-School Care - Extended-Day Kindergarten

Laurelhurst After School Enrichment Rooms (LASER) is a licensed and insured nonprofit organization which provides a before and after school enrichment program for children in grades K-5 and an extended-day kindergarten program.  LASER is located in portables on the Laurelhurst Elementary School north playground.  During the summer and other vacation periods, LASER operates an enrichment program for children ages 5-12.

LASER is currently licensed for 82 children. The extended-day kindergarten program is limited to 18 students in the morning and 18 students in the afternoons.  For more information about LASER’s enrollment policies and tuition, please visit their website at http://laserinfo.home.comcast.net or contact Stephen McCrea, Program Director, at (206) 925-6160.

There are other daycare providers in the northeast area.  Although the school does not make recommendations for one program over another, contact phone numbers are available in the school office.

“Extending the ALOHA Spirit” - New Family Back to School Night

An informal school tour is hosted the night before school starts for all new families. This walk-through gives families and children the opportunity to become familiar with the classrooms and the school and to meet some of their teachers.  New families have a chance to meet other families in a smaller relaxed setting.

Transportation and Pedestrian Safety

Safety Patrol
Fourth and fifth grade students provide safety patrol for the four street corners adjacent to the school before and after school. Students and parents should cross only at crosswalks and obey the student patrol guards.  All children who live south of the school and walk to school must use the pedestrian overpass on NE 45th.

Bus Transportation
Students living more than 1 mile from the school will be provided bus transportation, as determined by the Seattle School District guidelines.
