It is hard to believe that we are already at the end of the first trimester. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at conferences next week. I will be sending home reminder notices of the time you signed up for this week. Please let me know if there is a conflict so we can reschedule.
Field trip permission slips for our trip to the Children’s Museum went home on Friday. Please return them this week so we can get our money into the Children’s Museum. I will be contacting those interested in being chaperones with further details. Thanks!
In writing, we will be wrapping up our study of small moment stories. We will be studying how to write a close-in ending to our stories, revising our pieces, and fixing up and fancying up our pieces for publication. For our writers’ celebration we will be inviting our fourth grade buddies to come to the class and celebrate with us as we read our pieces to them (and maybe get to hear some of what the fourth graders have been writing).
In our reading time this week, we will continue to do our daily read to self, with some time to read to a partner. Students will also be meeting with me to read and discuss a “just-right” book in small groups. Finally, we continue to do our word sorts. Some students this week will begin to practice writing some words for practice to help familiarize them with spelling words and patterns.
In math this week, we will be continuing our third unit of study in math. This week we will practice doing addition and subtraction problems on the number grid, learn how we tell time to the half-hour, introducing the Frames and Arrows routine, and counting on a calculator.
In science, we continue to make daily observations of the cloud cover, precipitation, wind strength, and temperature. This week’s wild weather promises for interesting discussions! We will also be conducting a fair test to see what happens to the water temperature when you mix hot and cold water.
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I am looking forward to seeing you at conferences!

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate;
The first one said, "Oh my it's getting late."
The second one said, "There are witches in the air."
The third one said, "But I don't care."
The fourth one said, "I'm ready for some fun!"
The fifth one said, "Let's run and run and run."
"Wooooooo" went the wind,
And out went the lights.
And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight.
