Welcome to Room 19 where fourth grade is a challenging and rewarding experience. Learning here begins with building student confidence!

Math
In math we learn many concepts taught in a variety of ways utilizing several math curricula. Some of the math activities include such things as our geometry unit called “Polyhedraville,” where students design, calculate and build a city made of polyhedra. We also work on many problem solving strategies and practice solving problems in a fun ongoing unit called “Math Quest,” where the students earn travel dots for solving problems that help them travel through exciting lands in search of treasure.

Writing
In writing we write for a variety of purposes. The writing skills on which we work all year involve increasing competency in writing conventions (spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, paragraphing, grammar, and word usage), expanding word choice (vocabulary), sentence fluency, using voice, organizational skills, and making the content rich and understandable.

Students will work on writing narratives, expository pieces, technical writing, research reports, explanations of concepts and procedures, analytical responses to literature, journals, and poetry. We will also continue to develop skills using the writing process - - brainstorming ideas, writing a draft, editing, revising, and proofreading.

Social Studies
Our focus for fourth graders is on Washington State history, geography, and government. We also study United States geography. We will end the year with a field trip to our state capitol in Olympia. Also, as part of the Washington state historical studies, we will also extend our knowledge and appreciation of different Native American cultures.

In addition, we are working on a unit about the Great African American Migration that will tie into our study of the civil rights movement. We will also analyze Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. The students then will write an “I Have a Dream” speech of their own.

Science
The fourth grade science units are ecosystems, food chemistry, and electricity. The first unit we will study is ecosystems. The students will build their own ecosystems with a terrarium and aquarium. We will also research other types of ecosystems, particularly the old growth forest.  We will then take a field trip to Seward Park’s Old Growth Forest area.
