School Office Schedule

The School Office Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily except for school holidays.

Attendance Procedures

Students should not arrive at school prior to 8:50 a.m. because staff is not on duty to supervise the playground. Please remain outside until the entry bell rings at 9:00 a.m. unless your child is attending a specific program. If it is raining, the rainy day recess bell will ring at 8:50 to admit children to their classrooms.

If a student arrives after 9:05 a.m., he or she should report to the office and receive his or her late pass to take to class. Accepted reasons for tardies are posted in the Attendance Office, all other will be marked unexcused.

School Dismissal

Students are dismissed at 3:25 p.m.

Picking Up Your Child Before School is Dismissed

If a child needs to leave prior to 3:25 p.m., parents must come to the office to sign out and pick up their children. You may not pick up your children at their classrooms. Your child’s teacher must send your child to the office for pick up.

School district policy H55.01 states a child can only be released to a parent or guardian unless the school has written authorization. If you need to make special arrangements to have someone other than yourself pick up your child, please contact the school office for assistance.

Daily Attendance

Please call the Attedance Office at 252-5404 before 9:30 a.m. each morning your child will be absent. If the office does not hear from a child’s parent or guardian, staff will call early that morning to confirm the absence and the child’s safety.

Two or more unexcused absences will require a school conference to discuss attendance problems. (Per state law - Becca Bill)

Dress Code

There is no formal dress code. School is the child’s place of business and pride in appearance has a direct bearing on school work and behavior.

During hot weather, short shorts, undershirts, tank tops, and halter tops are NOT permitted.

Communication

Monday “Bear Essentials” School Bulletin
& Kid-Mail (Weekly)

Every Monday the school office publishes a newsletter giving parents a week-at-a-glance calendar, and the latest school and district information. Families have the option of receiving the newsletter by email (our goal is 100% email), or having a hard copy sent home with their youngest child. “Bear Essentials” is also posted weekly on the school website. Deadline for submissions is Thursday at midnight prior to the Monday bulletin in which you wish it to appear. Please email all submissions to smlundh@seattleschools.org.

PTA Bulletin Board

The board is located outside the office on the first floor of the school. Posted on the board you’ll find a school calendar, PTA minutes from the monthly board meeting, volunteer information and much more. Please take a few minutes each week to see what is happening.

PTA Website

Visit the PTA website at www.laurelhurstpta.org to find most everything you want to know about our school’s PTA. You’ll find information on volunteering, fundraising events, committees, a list of board members, PTA-sponsored programs and a special area devoted to our PTA auction. To submit information for the website, go to the homepage and click on the “Please email” link at the bottom of the page.

Nursing Services

Laurelhurst is lucky to have Bonnie Sandahl as its school nurse. Nurse Bonnie is at the school all day every Wednesday and alternating Thursdays from 8:40 am to 1:00 pm. She provides the following serivces.

When the nurses are not at the school, the office staff handles injuries and emergencies. Please remember that all medications should be taken at home. This includes over the counter medicines and those scheduled to be taken three times a day. If your child takes medication regularly and must take it at school, the parent needs to complete forms and obtain a doctors signature. Please talk to the school nurse regarding this procedure. If your child has serious health problems, please call the school office for assistance.

Transportation and Pedestrian Safety

Parking, Pick-Up and Drop-Off
To avoid congestion, encourage safe and legal parking, and still offer choices at drop off and pick up time, the following options are available:

  1. Park and walk: there is always plenty of parking a block away from the school in all directions. This is a great option, particularly for parents with young children who would like to escort their child to the classroom. The north playground is a great place to meet other parents and find out what is happening at the school. Take a few extra minutes to park your car on a block away from the school, walk in and meet your child on the playground. It is amazing how much you will learn and you may have some fun too!
  2. Designated drop off and pick up area:
The north end of the school (NE 47th Street) has been designated a drop off and pick up area. If you would like to use this area, simply drive onto this street heading east. You may park safely and legally long enough for your kids to get out of your vehicle on the passenger side. Parent volunteers will be needed to open vehicle doors at drop off. At pick up time, please do not park here unless you see your child waiting for you at the sidewalk, and can collect them without leaving your vehicle unattended. If there is continued non-compliance with this system, we will need to have the Seattle Police Department do sweeps to ticket unattended vehicles or vehicles parking for more than 3 minutes. This street is open for parking between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  3. School Perimeter Parking: There are also a limited number of parking spaces on the school perimeter on 47th Ave. NE, 46th Ave. NE, and NE 45th St. These are open to park all day without restrictions (except for bus load zones), although it is a convenient area for teachers and staff, who need to carry in supplies and materials. If you choose to do this, please make sure you are not parked too close to the curb corners at intersections.

Please follow the one-way traffic pattern outlined below when dropping off or picking up your child. This will eliminate some common problems such as crossing lanes, parking facing the wrong direction, and not crossing at the crosswalks. Do not park in bus loading zones.

Safety Patrol

Safety Patrol for the four street corners adjacent to the school is provided by the fifth grade students before and after school. It is important that all children who walk to school and live south of the school use the overpass. Please stress to your children the importance of crossing only at crosswalks and obeying the student patrol guard. Parents need to use the crosswalks also. We appreciate your support in providing a good example. Do not stop or park your car within 15 feet from the crosswalks, as the children on patrol have difficulty seeing and judging when it is safe to cross.

Bus Transportation

Students living more than 1 mile from the school will be provided bus transportation as determined by the Seattle School District guidelines. Students not riding their assigned bus on a specific day are required to bring a note from their parents. Students with arranged play dates should make note if they will need to ride a school bus with their friend. The office will need to prepare a “green card” that will allow them to ride.

Lunch Program

Free or Reduced Priced Meals

Each year the Child Nutrition Services Office distributes application forms to all families in the mail in August. Additional forms are available from the lunchroom manager. All applications are handled by our lunchroom manager and the information is kept confidential.

Lost and Found

The Lost and Found is located in the cabinet by the school patrol lockers. The lockers are located on the south end of the first floor hallway. Please check the cabinet periodically if your child is missing clothing or other personal items. Lunch boxes and clothing are also left in the school lunchroom.

Please remember that the school cannot assume responsibility for personal property of staff, parents, or students. Toys of any kind, radios, tape players, excess money, etc., should not be brought to school. Please try to clearly mark clothing articles, such as, hats, coats, sweaters, sweat shirts, backpacks, to help facilitate return to the rightful owner.
