Helpful Habits
We have over 500 students and staff here at laurelhurst. We are appealing to you to please work with us to keep things running smoothly and as stress free as possible. By developing proactive habits going forward, we feel that it will be time-saving, safer and will have a better outcome for everyone. Thanks for your cooperation! Read on…
Parking & Loading Safety
Please carefully read through the transportation and pedestrian safety sheet in your first day packet. Know the protocol to get this high volume of kids and vehicles smoothly in and out at the start and end of the school day. If it says “load” then don’t idle or park there. We need every driver and walker to follow the same rules to keep everyone safe!
Absences or Late Arrivals
If your child will be absent or late arriving, make a call to the attendance line at 252-5404. It is a 24-hour dedicated voice mail line. This courtesy is for safety, and saves us a lot of time and phone calls.
Sick Days
When in doubt, please don’t mask the symptoms with tylenol and send them to school. Children should not return to school until 24 hours after a fever, diarrhea or vomiting.
Medications at School
Anything from cough drops to tylenol to prescription medications/antibiotics must not be sent to school with a child. Call the school for guidance. We will work with you to get the paperwork done prior to a child being allowed any medications. The law requires both parent & physician signatures. This is a big safety issue!
Appropriate Footwear
lip flops are not allowed. Because we have multiple recesses per day, and especially on pe days, sturdy shoes are recommended every day for safe and active kids.
Label Their Stuff!
Please write names on/in all removable clothing items, backpacks, lunch boxes, etc. It’s a good idea at the start of the school year, and again when the seasonal clothes change, new items are received or purchased, etc. Borrow a sharpie in the office!
Lost & Found
Look through the found items regularly when you come to school. Bonus: if you follow the previous procedure, it automatically gets returned to your child when found.
Be Prepared
Lay out clothing, pack backpacks & make lunches the night before so you won’t have a hurried or grumpy start to the day.
Plan Ahead and Talk About It
Make sure to establish a clear plan for what your child is to do after school and have a conversation about it when it is any different than the regular routine. Especially on early release days, make sure to communicate that you know about it and how/if their routine will change. When students are confused, they miss busses and some get unnecessarily distressed. A lot of extra phone calls and confusion is caused for the staff as well.
Play Dates & Changes in Routine
Play dates must be preplanned and written notification sent to school to the teacher and office. Play dates cannot be made at school.
Voice Mail
The school telephones are only to be used for emergencies. Please instruct your child to always leave a voice mail if they need to call, so you will know the reason for the call. Parents always listen to your voice mail messages first; please don’t call the school randomly just because you saw the school number on your caller id! With all the phones and people in the building, we can’t begin to guess why someone called. If it is important they will leave a message or call you again.
Be on time!
Students should file in when the 9:00 bell rings. School dismisses at 3:15 this year!
