Tutoring Programs
We are proud to offer several tutoring programs to meet the needs of all learners. If you are interested in volunteering at John Hay, please email the SSIA volunteer coordinator.
Sound Partners
Sound Partners is a one-on-one tutoring program designed to help all students accelerate their growth in reading by developing primary reading skills.
Children in need of individual instruction work four days a week with a trained Sound Partners tutor. During these half-hour blocks on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, students are developing reading skills in order to help them meet the following Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs):
Reading EALR 1.1.4: Apply understanding of phonics
- Use onset and rime/word families to decode words in isolation and in context
- Decode words in isolation and in context, and use knowledge of phonics to read unfamiliar words
- Read words containing complex letter patterns and word families
- Use multi-syllabic decoding when reading two- and three-syllable words
- Read compound words, contractions, and words with common inflectional endings
Writing EALR 3.3.2: Know and apply writing conventions appropriate for the grade level
- Include beginning, middle, and ending sounds in phonetic spelling
- Recognize and use spelling rules and patterns
- Spell grade-appropriate high-frequency words correctly
- Identify misspelled words
Sound Partners contributes to John Hay’s comprehensive and balanced approach to reading instruction. This program includes instruction in isolated decoding skills as well as meaning-based instruction through increasing amounts of storybook reading.
We are proud to offer this service in support of our school vision: "Personal Success, Public Stewardship, and a Pathway to the Stars for Every Student."
Math Tutoring
John Hay Elementary is pleased to provide math tutors in all 3rd-5th grade classrooms. During math instruction, tutors work with students to provide additional support and individual attention, to ensure that all students develop the mathematical reasoning and problem-solving abilities they will need to achieve at high levels.
