Advanced Learning at John Hay
The Pathways Enrichment Program is designed to supplement the John Hay classroom experience with enrichment and acceleration in reading, writing and math.
Pathways is our own supplemental instructional program targeting the needs of the high achiever in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Higher order thinking and application of a solid skills base are integrated into all facets of the Pathways experience. Students in Pathways enjoy creative, rigorous and engaging lessons designed specifically for students who demonstrate the need for additional rigor and learning tasks. Pathways provides a wonderful supplement that goes above and beyond the classroom experience.
Pathways is comprised of a variety of instructional options from which a classroom teacher may choose to compliment and enhance the classroom experience. Instructional service, provided via a semi pull-out model, is provided throughout the school day. Classroom teachers work in cooperation with the Enrichment Specialist to select the Pathways option that best fit the needs of their high achieving students, and often select different configurations from year to year. Children are recommended to the Pathways program by the classroom teacher, based upon specific performance criteria.
All instruction, student assignments and learning outcomes are guided and evaluated according to the Advanced Learning Standards produced by the district in 2002. Because of the success of Pathways in meeting the unique needs of the high achiever, John Hay was the first school in the district to become accredited as an Advanced Learning Opportunity Site (ALO) in 2002. This ALO accreditation requires that John Hay meet certain requirements set before all schools with a Spectrum, APP or ALO designation.
