Music at John Hay
Music at John Hay is taught by musician-in-residence Scott Warrender. Mr. Warrender maintains a music class website with current class information, podcasts, and more.K-3 students at John Hay learn about rhythm, melody, note duration, tempo, dynamics, meter, notation and more, through singing and playing rhythm and mallet instruments.
They will practice performance techniques and create movements that enhance their interpretation of the music. This work will prepare them to perform in assemblies for the school and in a Winter Concert for the community.
Music and movement are recognized as being important to a child's well-rounded education. Performance programs enhance a student's sense of self-esteem as well as their social skills. Several studies have confirmed that music directly enhances learning through increased spatial development. Math and reading are improved by learning rhythms, decoding notes, and symbols. Incorporating music into the curriculum at John Hay ensures than every child has another option to finding success on their pathway in life.
Performances for the community support public stewardship through positive involvement with our community.
