Fundraising
As a public school in the Seattle School District, John Hay receives an allocation of money per student based on the District’s "Weighted Student Formula". According to the Formula, each student is allocated a base amount of money, which is supplemented by taking into account such factors as special educational needs and free and reduced lunch (poverty). John Hay’s $3,387 per student allocation is amongst the lowest in the district, based on our lower number of children in these categories.
However, John Hay families have always expected more. We raise money in order to support our educational priorities beyond what the District can provide. Due to our fundraising efforts, we will raise approximately an additional $250,000. Our fundraising supports programs at John Hay that reach all students, bringing many up to standard and also challenging those students with advanced needs, including: 14:1 reading block in 1st & 2nd grade, math tutors, Sound Partners Reading Tutors, Art, Spanish and Drama Programs and Pathways Advance Learning Program to name a few.
Fundraising Strategy: We focus on two major fundraisers, our Fall Move-a-thon and our Spring Auction. In addition, there are ongoing programs, including: Boxtops and Labels for Education collection, printer cartridge recycling, Safeway eScrip and the WAMOOLA debit card. Our philosophy has been to limit fundraising to these two major events. Our other programs take advantage of making money from activities most of us are already doing – they don’t involve parents and kids actively purchasing or selling items.
