Welcome to the John Hay Elementary website!
Whether you are a current family in the school, a prospective student or teacher, a friend or a newcomer, we hope that this site gives you a glimpse into our world while providing information that is helpful, timely and instructive.
We believe that all students can achieve high academic levels in accordance with the Washington State and District Learning Standards. While the learning process is different for each student, the teachers and staff at John Hay work hard to create an environment that challenges, supports, and instills creativity in the learning process. Our hope is that our students will leave the school with a sense of personal accomplishment and the full range of tools
necessary to be successful later in life. Furthermore, we believe that learning should be fun. We strive to instill a passion for exploration and intellectual curiosity.
In order to ensure that all students achieve at high levels of instruction, we set high expectations for our students and create curriculum that is clearly linked to District and State standards. These standards allow for creativity, problem solving, and critical thinking skills in literacy, math, science, social studies and the arts. Assessments are also authentic and aligned with these standards. In order to be successful, students are expected to explain their thinking in multiple ways.
Literacy continues to be the primary focus at Hay. Our teaching staff is well trained in the methods of teaching Literacy. They are fully equipped to understand, not only the standards, but are additionally trained in the following areas: National Urban Alliance (NUA) Literacy Initiative, six trait writing, NSF Inquiry-based science, balanced reading programs, guided reading techniques, conceptual themes, differentiated instruction, and equity in education (Courageous Conversations).
This year we will focus upon improving math instruction through linking the State Grade Level Expectations and the classroom curriculum (TERC Investigations). John Hay uses age appropriate instructional methods that integrate content areas and encourage hands-on, multi-sensory learning. Continuous progress for all students is expected - regardless of their current level of achievement
Student success is ultimately dependent upon our partnership with you, the parents and guardians. We are here to serve as an educational resource in the academic, social, and emotional development of young people. If we can assist you at any time, please do not hesitate to contact us. Your involvement in the education of your children is both valued and critical to the success of this most important work. Your continued support clearly makes a difference in student achievement. Tutors, 1:1 reading instruction, visual and performing arts, Spanish, Math Olympics, and small class size for many core subjects, are now available to students due to your generous contributions.
Thank you for your trust and your continued support.
