SREC students come from a variety of backgrounds, but all face barriers that limit their potential to learn in a traditional school setting. SREC provides an emotionally safe, supportive environment for students whose academic success is challenged by family issues, single parenting, homelessness, juvenile justice experiences or mild learning disabilities. Students range from 16-21 years of age. Amid a broad range of diversity, one factor is common to participants – they have made a personal commitment to complete their high school education.
Students are referred by public school counselors, regional social service agencies, outreach programs or they may be self-referred. Before enrollment eligibility can be determined, applicants must complete an intake appointment and academic assessment. Space is limited.
SREC operates on a semester basis and follows the Seattle Public Schools calendar. Students must make academic progress and meet state-required attendance levels.
