Theatrical inspiration comes from many sources; literature, myths and biography have long served as springboards for new plays. An innovative technique here involved a field trip to SAM and the works of Frida Kahlo and other Mexican Expressionists. Using skills of improvisation and perception, the actors took specific characters and situations from paintings and photographs to create scenes linked to the general theme of Valentine's Day. Later performed in an intimate theater before an informed audience, Sweetheart successfully blended visual art with storytelling.
