The H.R.C. is a support center for homeschooling families. Recognizing that parents are the primary educators, we provide them access to information, guidance, and resources to assist in their educational endeavors.Welcome Back

This is the HRC's eleventh school year to serve homeschoolers and our fourth year in this new location. For those of you who have been here from the start, you can see how far we have come. We give special thanks to all of you who participate in the variety of learning opportunities that we offer here at the HRC. We have successfully contracted with new teachers to offer an extended assortment of classes for this school year. In addition to new class offering , we are improving the quality and quantity of textbooks, resource materials and computers. Multimedia carts (one per class) with Video Projector, Document Camera, and new portable screens. Remember that our best advertising has been your recommendations. Imagine having your September classes signed up for in June. This can be a reality for you and your family! The week of June 15-18 you will have the opportunity to plan your homeschool life in relation to the HRC in advance. This change is the result of your feedback from annual year-end surveys. We realize that many of you plan your homechool schedules months in advance,

Level 3: High School Some changes are in store for students in grades 9-12 this year that we hope will simplify and clarify your path to graduation. Here’s what you need to know: Wendy Kennedy and Connie Jacobson will be the SLP teachers for high school students. You will be assigned to one or the other.Wendy and Connie will meet one-on-one with their high school students once each month. This year we plan to schedule the meetings, allow more time, and make the contact more meaningful by addressing class/credit progress, graduation requirements, as well as college and career counseling. We look forward to a great 2008-9 school year serving our high school students!

Math, History and Technology:

Tthe HRC is offering environmental educational classes on Fridays in Seward Park. Two classes will be devoted to Environmental Educational ( Forest Detectives I- Age group 9-11 & Forest Detectives II- Age Group 11-13) .

Pre-Algebra: Sue Knapp (ages 11-18), HRC Teacher Algebra I; Algebra II ; Geometry; Pre-Calculus: Nick Roux, HRC Teacher. Students that are working on a math curriculum or prefer a certain publication are encouraged to bring them into the center. We will do our best to provide guidance and accommodate both US and international math curricula. Students that feel that they are not ready for algebra should take “Basic Math”. Basic Math class focuses on computation. Students that have completed most of their basic math skills can enroll in their first algebra class. For clarity sake we will follow the traditional path of Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 , Pre Calc and Calculus.

Ocean Life I & II: (ages 5-8 & 8- 13) Anne Hinnendael, HRC Teacher.

Independent Study

Independent Study: Students learn at their own time and pace. Classes are held at the Lab using software that allows the students to find their areas of strength and areas that need improvement. Students can attend as many as 5 hours per week and as little as a few hours per month. Teachers can suggest enrollment in Independent Study as a complement to a formal class. HRC is a Microsoft Authorized Testing Center & Office 2007 Specialist Certification Center:

We will offer courses that prepare students to pass the Microsoft Office 2007 Certification exams. We will focus on giving Middle and High School students' confidence and competence in 1 or more of the MS Office Specialist (formerly called MOUS) is designed to validate desktop computer skills using MS Office applications and proves computer literacy.

The HRC is a Microsoft Authorized Testing Center. The exams are "live performance-based" using the actual programs. Exam candidates perform tasks to demonstrate their skills.

Site Council- next meeting June 18th

Our Site Council will meet on the second Thursday of each month from 3:15 - 4:45 pm. Minutes from our meetings are kept in the binder on the counter in the front room. We are currently looking for new members to maintain a strong parent component. Feel free to talk with staff members Cynthia, Wendy, Gloria, Krista or Martha to learn more about the role of the Site Council.
